Celebrated its 600th anniversary in 2022
Wells has a reputation for being England's smallest city, but that would also mean that it's a place with plenty of culture and history that will be easy to explore. Its most famous landmark is the Wells Cathedral, which is said to be the first cathedral in England built wholly in the Gothic style. And just across the street from this impressive edifice is where you'll be staying - The Swan Hotel. Serving travelers since 1422, The Swan has since gained a reputation as one of Wells' finest establishments. It welcomed guests from all walks of life, including notable figures like Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Today, it provides posh and comfy accommodations, delectable food, and even shining venues for special occasions.

The Swan Hotel first opened as a coaching inn all the way back in 1422, notable for sitting directly opposite the Wells Cathedral, and has remained there for over six centuries since. It was even used by the visiting clergy and nobility, along with road-weary travelers, making it a landmark establishment during that era. The Tudway family acquired the hotel in 1769, operating it as a family business until 1885. It was during their ownership that the hotel gained a reputation for being a distinguished social venue in Wells.
Though records are scant, The Swan did welcome some notable guests over the centuries. One of whom was Queen Anne of Denmark, who was said to have feasted at the inn in 1613. The famed poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, is also believed to have visited and lodged back in 1854.
More recently, the Swan Hotel celebrated its 600th anniversary back in 2022. The hotel was also acquired by The Coaching Inn Group that same year. Previously, it was owned by local businessman Kevin Newton, who had been operating The Swan for 15 years before the acquisition.
For its many structural and architectural details dating back centuries, The Swan Hotel was registered as a Grade II-listed property in 1953 to protect its heritage. Although it transformed over the years, many elements remain intact, namely the roughcast exterior with rendered plinth, the brick chimney stacks, and the slate roofs. Other significant changes include the rebuilding of the rear wing back in 1885, and the closing of the central carriageway to be replaced by a left-side entrance.
Despite the passing of time, the hotel has carefully preserved some of the more iconic hallmarks of its past. Select rooms and windows still have small cast-iron balconies, while the interior areas integrated their 16th-century molded beams, stone fireplaces, and vaulted stone cellars. Contrast to these are modern renovations and decor that updated the building's signage, lighting, and wallpapers, creating an atmosphere that blends the past and present.
Experience refined modern British cooking in a cozy, pub-style atmosphere set against the historic backdrop of Wells Cathedral. The hotel’s food offerings emphasize seasonality and local sourcing, featured in dishes carefully formulated by the hotel's chefs. Choose from the diverse menus available, from breakfast to dinner. They also have a children's menu tailored to developing palates, as well as a Sunday Roast selection. These items are complemented by a drinks list filled with vintages, craft beers, cocktails, spirits, and premium teas and coffees.
Aside from the dining service, The Swan also invites guests to partake in Afternoon Tea. Look forward to a wonderful preparation involving exquisite teas and coffees served alongside sandwiches, scones with cream and jam, and mini-cakes.

Wells may be known as England’s smallest city, but it is one packed with history and culture. The main attraction is the magnificent Wells Cathedral, a masterpiece of medieval architecture dating from the late 12th century, and recognized as the first Gothic cathedral of England. Adjacent to the cathedral is the Wells & Mendip Museum, founded by Herbert Balch in 1893, where visitors can learn about the local history, archaeology, and natural history. The city’s cultural attractions also include historic streets like Vicars’ Close, the scenic Bishop’s Palace & Gardens, and weekly markets in the Market Place.
There are also plenty of neighboring towns steeped in history and folklore. Glastonbury is one fine example, also filled with historic streets and establishments. Its landscape is highlighted by Glastonbury Tor, an iconic hill crowned with the ruins of a medieval church, offering panoramic views of the Somerset countryside. Also close by are the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey and the Somerset Rural Life Museum, letting travelers immerse themselves in the stories of the town's past and present.
If you need function venues for your private or corporate events, The Swan Hotel has a selection of wonderful spaces that can accommodate your special occasions. The hotel's dedicated event areas can be used for weddings and family gatherings, as well as corporate retreats and conferences. The Ivory Suite is a spacious function space with its own bar and flexible layouts for dining or receptions. The Garden Room comes bathed in natural light and provides direct access to a secluded walled garden. Should you need a much larger venue, both spaces can be combined to accommodate a grander scale of celebrations.
