Overview

Bath counts among the United Kingdom's most historic cities, built as a spa town during the 1st century. Today, it is a famous UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1987, and again later in 2021 as part of the Great Spa Towns of Europe. Due to its deep-running Roman influences, Bath is also a city that embraces classical aesthetics, with the most striking example being The Royal Crescent. Within this series of 18th-century townhouses sits The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa. Operating since 1971, the hotel is a luxurious getaway in the heart of the city, boasting opulent rooms and decadent dining. It is also close to Bath's finest highlights, including the many spas, museums, and the Roman Baths.

History

The story of the Royal Crescent Hotel is, of course, tied to the construction of the grand structure known as the Royal Crescent in Bath. Protected as a Grade I listed building, it is one of the most celebrated examples of Georgian architecture in the United Kingdom. The Crescent consists of 30 terraced houses laid out in an elegant, sweeping Palladian curve, with a striking facade marked by 114 Ionic columns. Together with its parklands and valley-like gardens, it became one of the most iconic representations of Bath's beauty and grandeur. It is also cited as a contributing factor to Bath's inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Royal Crescent Hotel's story is comparatively more recent. Back in the 1950s, the No. 16 unit was opened as a guesthouse, followed by the acquisition of No. 15 in 1971. Together, they were adapted into the hotel establishment we know of today. The quality of service and stay experience offered by The Royal Crescent Hotel lives up to its building's magnificence. The hotel proudly wears its distinctions, including two Michelin Keys, the Green Key Award, and the World's Best Country House Hotel Spa 2016 to 2018 from the World Spa Awards.

Design and Architecture

The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa occupies the central portion of the famed Royal Crescent, a majestic Grade I listed building collectively made up of Georgian townhouses. It was designed by John Wood the Younger and completed in 1774, becoming one of the most iconic structures not just in Bath, but the whole country. To this day, the Crescent’s exterior retains its unified Palladian design that was crafted in honey-yellow Bath stone, lined with Ionic columns.

The hotel itself consists of these two houses, Nos. 15 and 16, which have been adapted into luxurious accommodations and amenities. When guests enter, they'll find high ceilings, sturdy yet meticulously designed fireplaces, and ornate plasterwork, all notable design conventions of the Georgian Era.

Recent refurbishments were led by designers such as Woodhouse & Law and Clayton & Company. Their artistic transformations made use of vivid colors complemented by modern furnishings, ensuring that each of the 45 rooms and suites feels both stylish and rooted in heritage. Public areas like the lobby and lounges were also given makeovers, taking inspiration from Italian promenades and the building exterior's Palladian architecture.
