History

The Midland Hotel first opened its doors in 1903 and immediately became a favorite for travelers arriving by train from London. Designed by architect Charles Trubshaw, the building took five years to complete and was originally built to cater to rail passengers. A covered walkway connected Central Station to the Windmill Street entrance, making arrivals effortless.

From the start, The Midland offered more than just rooms; it had a purpose-built theater for drama and opera, Turkish baths, a winter garden, and a stunning roof garden that quickly became the place to see and be seen by Manchester’s high society. Afternoon tea was a daily ritual, with guests climbing seven flights of stairs for panoramic city views, though the nearby chimneys eventually forced the garden to close in 1910.

During the Second World War, American intelligence reported that the hotel was spared bombing, supposedly because Adolf Hitler admired its architecture. Within its first year, over 70,000 guests had visited, and over the decades, The Midland has welcomed everyone from rock stars to royalty. Today, it continues to attract celebrities and travelers alike, with a recent refurbishment breathing new life into its iconic spaces.

Design and Architecture

From the moment it opened, The Midland Hotel has been celebrated as one of Manchester’s most distinguished hotels, admired not just for its service but for its impressive architecture. The building is anchored by a sturdy steel framework, while the exterior mixes warm brown terracotta, red brick, and polished granite, giving it a timeless, elegant look. The ground floor combines soft pink granite with darker Shap granite, creating a striking contrast, and the upper floors are finished with brick and Burmantofts terracotta, adding texture and depth.

Recognized as a Grade II listed English Heritage building, The Midland fits seamlessly among Manchester’s historic structures, echoing the style of landmarks like Lancaster House and the London Road Fire Station. Inside, the hotel is just as remarkable. Its 312 rooms and suites offer a blend of comfort and style, but for those seeking something extra, the Midland Suites are the highlight. With larger living spaces, beautifully designed bedrooms, and thoughtfully chosen furnishings, the suites provide plenty of room to relax or entertain. Guests can take in the city from above and see Manchester’s streets, buildings, and landmarks all around.
