History

Perched high above the famous Fistral Beach in Newquay, Headland Hotel has a story as dramatic as its Atlantic views. The idea for this grand Victorian hotel was born in 1897, when architect Silvanus Trevail dreamed of creating a seaside retreat that could rival the great resorts of southern England. But locals were not keen on the plan at all. They saw the headland as common ground for grazing animals and drying fishing nets, and the clash that followed was almost legendary. Workers’ huts were tipped into the sea, walls were trashed, and disputes were so heated that Trevail himself was once pelted with eggs by an angry crowd.

Despite all this resistance, construction pressed on, and by June 1900, guests were stepping through its doors for the first time as it opened. Back then, it boasted luxuries few seaside hotels could match: electric lights, hot and cold water, and even an electric lift. Over the years, the Headland has seen calm and storm. It served as an RAF hospital during World War Two, and later fell into quiet disrepair.

In 1979, John and Carolyn Armstrong bought the hotel, and their dedication to its restoration has kept it thriving. Now, the Headland stands as a cherished coastal landmark, welcoming travellers with warm hospitality and sweeping sea views that have inspired admiration for over a century.

Design and Architecture

Headland Hotel is perched on top of a cliff overlooking the beach, a grand Victorian building that feels part of the Cornish coast. The main building grabs attention with its grand proportions and classic detailing, while its cliff-edge position makes the Atlantic views part of the architecture itself. The hotel’s rooms and suites continue the connection with the coast. Large windows frame the sea, gardens, or cliffs, while interiors use light, natural materials, and thoughtful details that honor the building’s history. The spa adds another layer of design that feels integrated.

Recent additions, like the AquaClub, complement the historic hotel while reflecting the coastline. Designed to sit low on the clifftop, much of the complex was built underground, and more than 400 tonnes of local Cornish stone were used so the building naturally echoes the cliffs. The roof is planted with indigenous coastal plants, helping it blend seamlessly into the landscape. Inside, the AquaClub houses six pools, bringing wellness and recreation into the design story.

Just beyond the main hotel, the self‑catering cottages bring another layer to the architecture and guest experience. These luxury cottages sit close to the sea and village streets, with a range of one, two, and three‑bed layouts. Many have big windows framing Atlantic views and private decks. Staying here gives you your own space while still enjoying the hotel’s facilities. Some cottages even feature private hot tubs for relaxing under the stars.

Every corner of the Headland, from cliff-edge terraces to wellness spaces, is designed to celebrate both the natural landscape and the hotel’s century-long history, making the architecture dramatic and unique.

Newquay Harbour runs sightseeing and sea fishing trips, while family-friendly attractions such as Newquay Zoo add another easy daytime option.

A short drive away, the Eden Project’s vast biomes introduce visitors to global plant life inside dramatic greenhouse structures. Fistral is one of the UK’s best-known surf beaches, drawing beginners and experienced surfers alike, with surf schools and board hire available in town.

Autumn and winter bring a more dramatic atmosphere. Atlantic swells roll in, waves strike the cliffs, and the coastline takes on a rugged character that attracts storm watchers and photographers. On calmer days, nearby landmarks such as Tintagel Castle offer windswept views and layers of Arthurian legend. The region has also become a steady draw for golf travelers, with several well-regarded courses within driving distance of the hotel. Beyond sport, Cornwall offers fishing towns, historic estates, and protected landscapes that reflect the county’s maritime history and deep connection to the sea.

In Newquay, Christmas markets and town center celebrations mark the start of the festive period, with stalls, lights, and live performances creating a lively atmosphere near the shoreline. At The Headland Hotel & Spa, the season is reflected through organized festive experiences, including afternoon tea and a Sustainable Christmas Market held in early December, where local producers showcase seasonal goods.

A short drive away, the Eden Project hosts its annual winter festival program inside its biomes, often featuring themed installations, family-friendly activities, and seasonal entertainment. Across Cornwall, additional winter fairs, light switch-on events, and holiday performances take place in towns and villages, giving visitors several ways to experience the region’s festive traditions.
