History

Queens Head Inn has been serving the people of Hawkshead and travelers in Cumbria since the 17th century, having become a fixture of the community and its history. Though not much is said of its actual story, the inn is protected as a Grade II listed property, denoting its significance. Renovations over the centuries have ensured the structure remains in fine condition, while also retaining many of its old features. Today, the inn focuses on an authentic old English country stay experience, with recent refurbishments adding stylish bedrooms and spaces while preserving historical aspects like the exposed beams and timbers, and the brick fireplaces.

Design and Architecture

Since the Queens Head Inn was founded back in the early 17th century, the building features a half-timbered construction popular during that time period. The exterior is washed in white, with stucco-painted roughcast walls supported by timber framing, crowned by a slate roof. Other notable architectural elements on the outside include sash windows with vertical glazing bars and horns, which are hallmarks of the Georgian and Victorian eras.

Modern refurbishments, including the more recent 2024 renovations, updated the inn with contemporary fixtures and decor while maintaining or adapting older aspects. The most apparent are the exposed timbers that now provide contrast to the stylish interior decor. The fireplaces are also intact period pieces, letting guests warm themselves during cold days just like how patrons of yore did.

Dining

Meals

Dining at the Queens Head Inn transforms a typical pub meal into a rich and diverse English culinary experience. Classic dishes such as fish & chips and steak & ale pie are given modern twists, incorporating modern flavors such as curry sauces. The menu has plenty more options, including freshly prepared fish, signature burgers and sandwiches, and sinful desserts. Sundays are particularly anticipated because the inn puts extra care into its Sunday Roast selections. Vegetarians and vegans won't miss out, as the restaurant prepares meat-free options. Similarly, the pub offers dog-friendly menus, so your four-legged best friends won't be missing out on delicious dinners.

Breakfasts are also prepared with extra care, with options ranging from full English and vegan English, handy sandwiches, to classic fare like porridge oats with honey.

Opening hours:
Breakfast: 8:30 am - 10 am
Monday to Saturday: 12 pm - 2:30 pm; 5 pm - 8:30 pm
Sunday: 12 pm - 7:45 pm

Drinks

No pub is complete without an incredible menu of tasty beverages. Pair your meal with a regional ale, a smooth vintage, or a signature cocktail, carefully prepared at the Queens Head Inn's bar. If you prefer something that suits the weather, such as a warm cuppa during winter, they also offer chocolate and coffee options.

Events and Experiences

Cultural and Outdoor Experiences

Nestled in Cumbria's Lake District, Hawkshead is an idyllic village surrounded by gentle hills and flowing waterways, making it a verdant slice of English paradise. Travelers looking for a laid-back vacation will love this peaceful countryside filled with life's simpler joys.

Those who love to keep active can explore the mountain trails of The Fells via hiking or cycling. Sporty types can also book a day of golfing at the Windermere Golf Club, which is open year-round. The Lake District is fondly known as the home of Beatrix Potter, and the surrounding areas are said to have inspired many locations and characters in her children's books. Several landmarks tied to her legacy are open for visits, such as the Hill Top Beatrix Potter House and Wray Castle, both of which are managed by the National Trust. There are also a variety of attractions related to her works, such as the World of Beatrix Potter visitor center.

Other ways to enjoy the region include hopping aboard a Windermere Lake Cruise, catching a local performance at the Victoria Wood Theater, or watching horses compete in jump races at the Cartmel Racecourse.
