Nailcote Lane , Berkswell, Berkswell, United Kingdom, CV7 7DE
Built in 1640 as a typical English country house, Nailcote Hall gets its name from the Norman-French word for "armorer". The name also provides a connection to the estate's origins as land granted by William the Conqueror after he unified England.
Soon after Nailcote was established, the estate suffered due to the English Civil War that broke out in 1942. The house itself suffered damage at the hands of Cromwell’s forces before they assaulted nearby Kenilworth Castle. Remarkably, the repair bill was settled by the victorious Parliamentarians, and the manor was soon restored. Over the centuries, the property passed through various hands, with the Lant family holding it the longest, at 300 years. They altered and restored Nailcote Hall several times, including the addition of a Georgian wing in 1780.
Nailcote was later designated as a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England, registered in 1952. Decades later, it opened to the public as a restaurant in 1984, eventually converting into a countryside hotel and expanding with additional bedrooms and amenities.
Even though it was built over three centuries ago, Nailcote Hall Hotel retains much of its original architecture, which has been embellished over the years. The core of the hotel is its Jacobean building, with features such as a pitched tiled roof, timber framing with red brick and plaster infill, and traditional lattice casement windows. For its interiors, the original woodwork includes chamfered beams and is complemented by vintage-style furnishings.
Improvements and restorations were constantly done to Nailcote Hall, with the biggest being a Georgian wing that was added in 1780. Likewise, the hall was expanded when it opened as a restaurant and hotel, particularly in 1989 with the addition of bedrooms, an events hall, and a library. These were soon followed in 1991 by leisure amenities that were built in the walled garden area. Also integrated were accessibility features, including wheelchair-friendly bathrooms with adapted bathtubs and toilets.
