Utilized as an annex of Hampton Court Palace to accommodate royal guests
When Thomas Wolsey had Hampton Court Palace built for himself, it was so lavishly beautiful that Henry VIII ended up coveting it. Its exquisite symmetry and style made it the royal residence of choice until the 18th century. In 1665, King Charles II's burgeoning court needed more accommodations for royal guests, and thus, the Mitre Hotel was built. Centuries later, that very same building remains standing across Hampton Court Palace and the River Thames, treating travelers to incredible views from their rooms and spaces. Serving delicious British cuisine and surrounded by delightful cultural attractions, a stay will let you deeply immerse yourself in English history and sensibilities.

Long before it became the fancy riverside hotel we see today, the main building of the Mitre Hotel arguably served as an extension of the famous Hampton Court Palace. King Charles II had the Mitre built in 1665 as a guesthouse for esteemed guests visiting the grand royal residence. Earlier records show that the Mitre was originally a tavern and included several other buildings and a garden. Apart from distinguished royal guests, the inn was a favorite venue of William IV, the Duke of Clarence, who held gatherings for his Toy Club there.
Though not much is detailed about the Mitre Hotel's story in the succeeding centuries, it did survive several tumultuous eras, particularly both World Wars of the 20th century. Its previous owner was Combined Counties Properties, led by the Dunsdon family. The Signet Collection purchased the Mitre Hotel from them in 2020, kickstarting their brand of stylish historic hotels.
With Mitre Hotel being such a long-standing structure with a notable past, it's no surprise that it is listed as a Grade II historic property. Although the original building was from 1665, it received updates and expansions over the centuries, particularly during the 1700s. Features such as the plain brown brick, red dressings, tile hipped roof are hallmarks of the 18th century's Georgian style, while the doorcase featuring entablature and fluted capitals is attributed to the 19th century.
When it comes to furnishings and decor, the Mitre Hotel takes a more practical approach by using contemporary items to create an old-world atmosphere. Each room has its own theme and style, which are then complemented by the views of Hampton Court Palace or the River Thames. The suites, in particular, are themed after historic figures such as Catherine Parr and Henry VIII.
The signature restaurant of the Mitre, 1665 Brasserie, is named after the hotel's founding year, and fittingly serves fine cuisine prepared with much care and skill. Try the classic British fare, such as the saddle of fallow deer, roasted partridge, and fried halibut, or go for multicultural offerings like the fish curry or crab linguine. They also hold weekly Sunday Roasts, promising flame-cooked servings of pork belly and beef.
Aside from the day's meals, 1665 also hosts Afternoon Tea services, treating guests to seasonal blends and desserts. Nibble on delectable sandwiches, sinful desserts and pastries, while refreshing yourself with a cuppa. Elevating the experience is the hotel's Regency-themed tea party, heavily inspired by shows like Bridgerton to evoke the pomp and glamor of the past.
