That is Hyde London City, and perhaps the next place you'll be staying. Built in 1874, this establishment was originally the Spiers & Pond Hotel and served as one of the most lavish stays in the city. Ennismore revived the hotel in 2024, offering a cozy yet stunningly stylish place to stay. Dine on delightful Turkish cuisine at Leydi, and party in the underground Black Lacquer bar. While here, don't miss out on the numerous sightseeing opportunities at places like St. Paul's Cathedral.
15 Old Bailey, EC4M7EF London, United Kingdom
Hyde London City traces its origins back to 1874, when the building first opened as the Spiers & Pond Hotel. The luxurious Victorian establishment was owned by British entrepreneurs Felix Williams Spiers and Christopher Pond. The pair made their wealth operating restaurants in Melbourne, then later returned to London to expand their businesses. They commissioned architect E. Evans Cronk to design their flagship hotel, who then took heavy inspiration from Georges-Eugène Haussmann's renovation of Paris. The hotel quickly became a sought-after destination for travellers and local professionals, especially those working near the Old Bailey. The edifice was valued for its magnificent architecture, boasting ornate stonework and a distinctive mansard roof - all aspects reflecting the opulence of the French Second Empire.
It modernised during the early 20th century with Edwardian updates, then survived both World Wars largely intact. By the mid-20th century, changes in travel and hospitality trends resulted in a gradual decline. Fortunately, the building's architectural significance was recognized and was designated a Grade II-listed building in 1998, protecting it from demolition.
Ennismore, a brand known for restoring and adapting heritage buildings for hospitality, acquired the property in 2020. They worked alongside architecture and design firm Studio Moren to renovate and revitalize the building, finally reopening it in 2024 as Hyde London City.
Originally the Spiers & Pond building, Hyde London City is situated within a Victorian Grade II‑listed landmark dating back to 1874. Its current revival is thanks to Studio Moren, whose work celebrates this structure's heritage by reinstating features such as ornate cornicing, tall skirtings, and even the original timber flooring. The facade is embellished with elaborate moldings and crowned by a Parisian mansard roof, preserving the hotel's historic character after well over a century.
For its interiors, Hyde London City wholly embraces its Victorian sophistication and positions itself as a posh yet bohemian establishment. Guestrooms feature rich color themes and palettes by using vibrant textiles and playful wallpapers that were also used during the Victorian era. Even the dining spaces commit fully to atmosphere and style, with the Istanbul‑inspired Leydi restaurant presenting Turkish aesthetics, and the Black Lacquer bar showing off modern Tokyo. That said, the hotel didn't neglect its accessibility, as the renovations also included the addition of wheelchair-friendly rooms for impaired guests.
Delightful all-day Turkish dining is what awaits you at Leydi. The restaurant is rooted in the lively eating culture of Istanbul, offering everything all the way from breakfast to dinner.
