Awarded Two AA Rosettes
Stratford-upon-Avon was long since a bustling and prosperous medieval market town, yet its popularity would explode when a local-born playwright named William Shakespeare captured the hearts and minds of the kingdom. Tourism here is centered around Shakespeare's exploits, including the places he lived, studied, and spent his time leisurely. Though the building of Hotel Indigo existed during his time, it did not become an inn until 1650, then named the Falcon Hotel. With centuries of hospitality tradition to live up to, the present-day Hotel Indigo does not disappoint. Guests will enjoy beautifully decorated accommodations, spaces with a medieval atmosphere, and exquisite regional dining. Couples can celebrate their union with Shakespeare's spirit, and also use the historic town as a backdrop.
4 CHAPEL STREET, Guildhall, Stratford Upon Avon, United Kingdom, CV37 6HA
While not intrinsically tied to the life story of William Shakespeare, the building Hotel Indigo occupies has long since been a fixture in Stratford-upon-Avon. The preserved half-timbered structure was a private residence during the 16th century, later becoming the famed Falcon hotel around the year 1650. It became the birthplace of the Shakespeare Club in 1824, and remains the venue for their annual dinners. After several centuries, it was acquired by IHG Hotels in 2019, becoming Hotel Indigo - Stratford-upon-Avon. Yet out of respect for the building's long-standing history, it also kept the Falcon Hotel name for its facilities and spaces.
Hotel Indigo Stratford-upon-Avon, formerly the Falcon Hotel, is registered as a Grade II listed building dating back to the 16th century. Although operating as a commercial establishment, many of its heritage features are preserved due to their architectural and historic importance. The structure is designed as a Tudor townhouse, with a third level added sometime during the mid-17th century.
The exterior boasts a timber frame and plaster infill facade set on a rubble plinth foundation and crowned with a tiled roof. Aspects such as the jettied upper floors and leaded windows with molded mullions and transoms are defining features of late medieval townhouses. The indoor spaces are similarly historic, lined with exposed chamfered beams, early paneling, and stone fireplaces.
Perhaps to provide a luxurious contrast to the stylish yet rustic classical architecture, accommodations have been done in contemporary contexts. Even the Tudor rooms with exposed timbers and Georgian rooms with stone fireplaces are fitted with modern furnishings and decor. Also included with the updates are accessibility features, ensuring the hotel remains welcoming and inclusive to those with disabilities and impairments. Select units come equipped with wheelchair-friendly features and visual aids, especially in the bathrooms.
