History

The Bull Hotel in Long Melford has a story stretching back to around 1450, originally built as a house for a wealthy wool merchant and later becoming an inn by 1580. By 1865, it was listed as a commercial inn and posting house, serving as the town’s principal stop for coaches traveling between London, Bury St Edmunds, and Norwich. In the 19th century, Petty Sessions were held here every fortnight, adding to its role at the heart of the village.

Over the years, the inn has welcomed countless visitors, including some notable guests. John Lennon and Yoko Ono stayed in the Bridal Suite. Today, the Bull sits in Long Melford, a village known for its antique shops and proximity to the River Stour, offering travelers a glimpse into centuries of local life and history.

Design and Architecture

The Bull Hotel’s timber-framed exterior is a well-known sight in Long Melford, hinting at its long history and traditional English style. The building mainly reflects late medieval timber-framed architecture, with later 17th-century additions that blend seamlessly into the inn’s character. Inside, the traditional atmosphere continues, with open fires in the restaurant and bar, grille windows, and historic furniture throughout. Each of the 25 bedrooms is unique, many featuring four-poster beds and period touches.

Over time, the building has been carefully restored, including two cottages on the south end rebuilt in 17th-century style and incorporated into the inn. Original features remain inside, giving the rooms a lived-in, historic feel. Timber-framing and decorative carvings can be seen throughout, and the windows have been restored in 16th-17th century style with leaded lights. At the back, a courtyard is enclosed by the wings, and the tiled roof keeps its original chimney stack at the south end. It’s a place where history is alive, but still welcoming for travelers looking for comfort and character.
