History

Ashdown Park used to be part of the huge Ashdown Forest, which was enclosed way back in 1693. Over the next hundred years, it changed hands a few times. The first big house here was built in the early 1800s, either by Thomas Bradford in 1815 or by Rear Admiral Jacob Henniker, who owned it from 1822. Back then, the Estate was massive and included Pippingford Park, Old Lodge, and even an Army Training Ground. In 1867, Thomas Charles Thompson, a Member of Parliament, bought it. He knocked down the old house and built the main part of the house that’s still there today. In 1886, he added a small church for his family and locals and even built a school for children, giving them free lunches until it closed in 1943.

During World War I, the house was turned into a hospital for Belgian officers. Later, in 1919, Sister Marie Saints Anges of the Notre Dame Order bought it as a convent. She added the West Wing, the Church of Our Lady and St Richard, and the East Wing over the next couple of decades. The nuns stayed for nearly 50 years. After that, it became an educational center, then a Barclays Bank training center.

Since February 1, 1993, Elite Hotels has owned Ashdown Park. They carried out a major refurbishment, restoring the interiors, redecorating, and updating the building. Following the renovations, the property reopened as Ashdown Park Hotel and Country Club in October 1993.

Over the years, Ashdown Park has earned numerous accolades, highlighting its exceptional quality and service. It proudly retains its AA 4 Red Star Hotel 2024 status, recognising it as one of the very best hotels. Design and Architecture

Ashdown Park started life as a country mansion in the 1860s and still carries that Gothic Revival character today. As a Grade II listed building, the original structure has been carefully looked after, and you can still see its personality in the stonework, proportions, and details throughout the house. One of the standout spaces is the former chapel, now beautifully repurposed. Surrounded by Ashdown Forest, the landscape that inspired A. A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh, the hotel feels closely tied to its surroundings. That influence shows up in the interiors, where each room has its own style and is named after trees found in the forest.

With nine room categories to choose from, the accommodation ranges from individually styled rooms to spacious Master Suites with sweeping forest views. The Fairways Suites sit beside the Country Club, overlooking the first tee and ninth green, making them a great pick for golfers and spa lovers. Guests also have access to the indoor swimming pool, rounding out the lived-in country house feel.
