More than just a historic hotel, the Adelphi provides luxury and comfort without needing guests to overspend. Their meal offerings are also centered around enjoying the great Liverpool food culture instead of decadently lavish dining experiences. So come to city of the Merseybeat and enjoy a fine and memorable stay.
Ranelagh Place, L3 5UL Liverpool, United Kingdom
It was in 1826 when hotelier James Radley opened the Ranelagh Place on what had been Ranelagh Gardens, Liverpool's first official public park and gardens. Though a moderately successful business, it was replaced in 1876 by a larger, more ambitious hotel. It was later acquired by Midland Railway in 1892, renaming it the Midland Adelphi. This particular incarnation became famous throughout the country for its turtle soup delicacy, along with the basement's extensive heated water tank systems for keeping live turtles. Between 1911 and 1914, the hotel underwent a major transformation to a new Edwardian design made by R. Frank Atkinson, regarded as one of the finest British hotels outside London.
After surviving the tumultuous first half of the 20th century relatively unscathed, the Adelphi was acquired by the Britannia Hotels group in 1983. It was also declared a Grade II listed building a few years prior, in 1975, ensuring its historic status.
The Adelphi Hotel was constructed between 1911 and 1914, replacing an earlier building from 1876. The exterior consists primarily of Portland stone, set on a steel frame and organized into seven stories and eleven bays. The facade features Edwardian elements such as round-arched windows with keystones, rectangular windows, and a recessed central section flanked by Ionic columns. By 1975, these aspects were recognized for their architectural and historic significance and became protected through the hotel's Grade II listed status.
When it comes to the interiors, Adelphi’s layout and decor continue to embrace and incorporate classic conventions. You'll find spaces and halls lined with marble panelling, columns, and coffered arches. The Central Court, in particular, features pilasters, glazed screens, and French doors in styles dating back decades. Alongside the maintenance and improvements, the hotel also made updates to its accessibility. The management has integrated safety and disability-friendliness to six select rooms, including things like grab rails, accessible toilets, and even evacuation chairs in case of emergencies.
At Adelphi, you won't just be treated to amazing stays; you'll also get to enjoy a wide variety of amazing cuisine from all over the world served across its wonderful dining spots.
Start your day with their hefty Big Britannia Breakfast, a hearty buffet that's sure to fill you up with flavors and energy. If you prefer more fixed options, they also serve a full English breakfast, along with lighter items like pastries, cereals, and fruits for the calorie-conscious.
