Overview

The Smith Hotel is a striking fusion of 19th-century heritage and modern luxury. Originally built in 1864 as a Gothic Revival church by architect John Power, the building has lived through fires, rebuilds, and a later chapter as a United church before being thoughtfully transformed into a boutique hotel. The architecture remains the highlight, extending into bright loft spaces designed with full kitchens. While the hotel provides breakfast, its downtown location places Kingston’s restaurants, cultural spots, and waterfront within easy walking distance. For smaller gatherings, the Sanctuary Coworking mezzanine offers a distinctive setting for weddings and events. Altogether, it feels less like checking into a hotel and more like staying inside a thoughtfully restored piece of the city’s past.

History

The Smith Hotel stands in a building with a rich past, originally constructed as Queen Street Methodist Church, also known as Welsley Hall. Designed by architect John Power in 1864, it was built with the support of 242 prominent Kingston citizens. Power was a leading figure in Gothic Revival architecture in southeastern Ontario, responsible for notable structures including McIntosh Castle, the original Hotel Frontenac, St. George’s Hall in Kingston, and the Napanee Courthouse and Jail.

The building underwent several significant changes over the years, including reconstructions in 1884 and 1886 following fires. In 1925, it became Queen Street United Church, continuing its role as a center for community gatherings. Despite these transformations, many original architectural features were preserved. Today, these elements are integrated into the hotel’s lofts, allowing guests to experience historic craftsmanship alongside contemporary comforts. The Smith Hotel celebrates this heritage, combining the spirit of 19th-century Gothic Revival design with the vibrancy of Kingston’s modern city life, offering a unique stay that honors both its past and present.

Design and Architecture

The Smith Hotel keeps the charm of its 19th-century limestone church while making it feel fresh and inviting. Tall arched windows fill the lofts with natural light, showing off the thick stone walls, vaulted ceilings, and original timber beams that give the building a strong sense of history. Many lofts are two-level, using the high ceilings to create separate living and sleeping areas while keeping the space open and airy. Full kitchens and comfortable furnishings make each loft feel like home, while small touches like record players and carefully chosen materials add warmth and personality.

Some units have private terraces or floor-to-ceiling glass walls, giving guests a unique view of Kingston’s streets. The combination of original stone, brick, and timber with modern finishes and sleek furniture creates a balanced heritage-modern aesthetic. Walking through the hotel feels like stepping into a historic space that has been thoughtfully updated, where every arch, beam, and window tells a story, yet the rooms remain comfortable, bright, and practical for modern stays.
