654 Nelson Street, V6B 6K4 Vancouver, Canada
Before it became Hotel Belmont Vancouver, the building was first constructed in the early 1908 and opened in 1912 as the Barron Hotel. At the time, Granville Street was evolving from a typical thoroughfare into the city's lively entertainment district. Colonel Oscar Barron and his family keenly saw the many opportunities this provided and opened their own establishment. In 1925, general manager W.D. Wood purchased the property, renaming it the Belmont Hotel.
It changed hands several more times during the rest of the 20th century, becoming the Nelson Place Hotel and the Dakota Hotel at some point. Pacific Reach Properties acquired the hotel in 2017, and after extensive restoration and refurbishment, reopened it as Hotel Belmont Vancouver as part of their MGallery Collection.
The original building was designed by the Vancouver architectural firm Parr & Fee, giving the hotel the Edwardian edifice it is known for even today. The design reflected a blend of influences from late Victorian architectural tastes, along with Canada's emerging identity, resulting in Neoclassical and Georgian touches. Typical features from the period include multipaned sash windows and bay windows, making use of natural light. At the time, Parr & Fee was also handling other projects along Granville Street, influencing the district's architectural landscape for decades to come.
Following the property's acquisition by Pacific Reach in 2017, extensive renovations and restorations were undertaken beginning. The intent was to preserve and highlight the historic architectural elements while introducing contemporary aesthetics that represented modern trends and tastes.
While Hotel Belmont's on-site restaurant, The Living Room, closed in 2025, guests can still find plenty of dining options around Granville Street. Right outside the door, you already have plenty of options, ranging from fast food, gastronomique dining, and comfy cultural eateries.
