100 Front Street West, M5J 1E3 Toronto, Canada
The Fairmont Royal York stands as a towering symbol of Toronto’s transition into a global city since its opening. Its construction story began in 1927, when the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) purchased the estate of the former Queen's Hotel. Its president, Sir Edward Wentworth Beatty, sought to build the most luxurious and largest hotel in the British Empire. To turn his ambitious vision into reality, architecture firm Ross and Macdonald, in association with Sproatt and Rolph, designed a stunning 28-story masterpiece.
The hotel opened in 1929, catering to wealthy travelers arriving at Union Station, located directly across the street. At the time of its opening, it was the largest building in the British Commonwealth and was one of the few hotels offering hot running water in every room. It eventually became a popular hangout for the Canadian elite, and welcomed big names like Queen Elizabeth II, Margaret Thatcher, and Winston Churchill. Over the years, the Fairmont Royal York underwent several renovations to maintain its status while catering to modern hospitality needs.
Today, The Fairmont Royal York remains a central cultural hub in downtown Toronto, winning several awards for its hospitality, sustainability, and culinary achievements.
Designed by Ross and Macdonald, Sproatt and Rolph, the architecture of Fairmont Royal York is a masterclass in Château-esque and Gothic Revival styles, designed to mirror the grandeur of European castles. Its exterior is clad in Indiana limestone, similar to the neighboring Union Station, giving the building its monolithic feel. Like many of Canada's railway hotels, the hotel boasts a pitched roof with small dormers and grotesques. However, what sets the Fairmont Royal York apart is its Art Deco setback design, along with its Neoclassical motifs and arcaded windows.
Inside, guests are welcomed by intricate hand-painted ceilings, Italian travertine and marble pillars, and a marble spiral staircase. With all these design wonders, renovation efforts ensure that these features are meticulously preserved so the hotel is adapted to modern standards. In particular, the 2019 renovation saw that its timeless Art Deco elements coexist with its contemporary amenities. For its design efforts, Fairmont Royal York won the Best Lobby Design Award in Hotelier Magazine's 2019 Design Awards.
Led by Executive Restaurant Chef Roland Torok-Ducharme, REIGN Restaurant & Bar serves as the hotel's primary dining area. It offers a sophisticated menu paying tribute to Canada's natural wilderness, focusing on hunter and angler traditions. Expect dishes made of high-quality meat, seafood, and ingredients sourced from the region's local farmers and producers, while enjoying the sophisticated atmosphere with wooden interiors and a grand fireplace.
