At Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, guests can savor the best regional cuisine, all while exploring Old Quebec's historic streets. Aside from receiving international awards and recognition, the hotel proudly holds a Five Green Keys Certification from Green Key Global for its sustainability efforts, making it a world-class standard of environmental responsibility.
1 Rue des Carrieres, G1R 4P5 Quebec City, Canada
Fairmont Le Château Frontenac was conceived during the golden age of railway expansion in Canada. Its construction began in 1892 as part of the grand railway-hotel strategy of the Canadian Pacific Railway and championed by railway president William Cornelius Van Horne. American architect Bruce Price designed the hotel, taking inspiration from medieval castles in France, thus creating what would become one of the finest examples of Châteauesque architecture in North America.
Since it opened in 1893, Fairmont Le Château Frontenac has welcomed royalty, political leaders, artists, and celebrities. A suite has been designated for the visits of Queen Elizabeth II, and Princess Grace of Monaco was a guest of honor at the hotel during the 1969 Quebec City Winter Carnival. But perhaps the hotel's most important historical moment came during World War II, when the Château hosted the First and Second Quebec Conference, attended by Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill.
Historically and culturally significant, the Château Frontenac continues to receive international acclaim. The hotel has won the Global Hotel of the Year Award from the 2022 World Luxury Awards and Best Luxury Historic Hotel from the 2023 Global Luxury Hotel & Spa Awards.
Designed by architect Bruce Price, Fairmont Le Château Frontenac is one of the world’s most celebrated examples of Châteauesque architecture. Its distinct exterior is a standout, featuring pitched roofs, Glenboig brick wall cladding, and ornate gables and windows. As a prime example of Châteauesque architecture, the hotel served as inspiration for other grand railway hotels in Canada.
The interiors are also as elegant and grand as the hotel's exterior. Find rich mahogany paneling, carved stone details, marble staircases, and wrought-iron design elements. The hotel has over 600 guest rooms, with suites named and themed after prominent guests like Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Grace of Monaco, and Alfred Hitchcock.
To keep up with modern hospitality and travel standards, the Château Frontenac underwent several renovation projects, with its most recent one being in 2014. This renovation sought to modernize the hotel while keeping its distinct features intact, including the main lobby and banquet areas.
The restaurants at Fairmont Le Château Frontenac showcase a medley of cuisines, using seasonal ingredients while housed in unique and distinct settings.
