History

Located along the Niagara River in Queenston, South Landing Inn traces its roots back to the early 19th century, when the area served as an important stop for travelers moving between settlements. The current building is widely believed to date to around 1827, placing it among the older surviving structures in the region. The property was linked to Thomas Dickson, an early businessman and landowner who played a role in the development of Queenston.

By the mid-1800s, the site had established itself as a place of lodging, operating under different names over time, including Prospect House and Frontier House, before later becoming known as South Landing. In the early 20th century, the inn took on a more community-oriented role under new ownership and was known as Riverview Inn. During this period, it also became part of local events, including serving as a place of assistance during a nearby railway accident in 1915.

Through the decades, the building continued to evolve. It briefly operated as a craft and weaving center in the 1950s, attracting visitors from beyond the region. Later renovations in the late 20th century helped preserve the structure while adapting it for continued hospitality use. Today, South Landing Inn remains part of Niagara-on-the-Lake’s historic landscape, reflecting its long-standing role as a riverside stop for travelers.

Design and Architecture

South Landing Inn reflects the character of an early 19th-century country inn, with a simple, traditional structure that fits naturally into its riverside setting in Queenston. The building itself is modest in scale, more in line with historic inns than grand hotels, and its location overlooking the Niagara River adds to the overall sense of quiet, scenic charm.

Inside, the design leans toward an eclectic, vintage-inspired style. Rooms are individually styled with antique furniture, Persian rugs, and curated décor pieces that give each space its own personality. The use of upcycled furnishings and original prints adds a slightly artistic, lived-in feel. Common areas continue this relaxed, home-like atmosphere, with shared spaces like a lounge, small library, and outdoor patios that connect guests to the surrounding landscape.

The inn has a limited number of accommodations, with six uniquely designed rooms and suites. These range from cozy queen and king rooms with river or escarpment views to larger multi-room suites like Room One and the Riverview Suite, which include additional living space, multiple beds, and in some cases, kitchen facilities.

Dining

Dining at South Landing Inn is kept simple and flexible, more in line with a small riverside stay than a full-service hotel. The property does not have an on-site restaurant, so meals are not a central part of the in-house experience. Instead, guests typically rely on nearby dining options in Queenston and Niagara-on-the-Lake, both of which are just a short drive away. The surrounding area is known for its mix of casual cafés, local restaurants, and winery dining, so there’s plenty to explore.

The inn provides a complimentary continental-style breakfast each morning with fresh, local ingredients, usually served early so you can head out for the day. Some suites also have small kitchens or kitchenette facilities, which make it easy to prepare light meals or snacks during your stay. This setup works well for travelers who prefer a more independent, self-paced experience. Overall, the focus remains on the experience of the stay, while most dining happens just beyond the property.

Events & Experiences

Cultural and Outdoor Experiences

At South Landing Inn, the experience is self-paced, and guests usually spend time relaxing in shared spaces or unwinding on outdoor patios overlooking the Niagara River. Step beyond the property and there’s a lot to explore across Niagara-on-the-Lake and nearby areas. You’ll find plenty of spots that feel more like hidden gems than typical retail stops. Places like Lakeshore Antiques and Treasures and Antiques on Creek are packed with vintage finds and collectibles.

Art lovers can stop by Queenston Pottery Studio or Jordan Art Gallery to see local craftsmanship up close. The region is also known for its vineyards, so wine tasting is almost a given. Southbrook Vineyards focuses on organic, biodynamic wines, while Kew Vineyards is one of the older producers in the area.

Nature is a big part of the experience here. Walk along the river at Whitewater Walk or explore trails at Niagara Glen Nature Reserve. The Bruce Trail runs through the region if you’re up for a longer hike. Niagara Falls is also just a short drive away. For something more adventurous, there’s the Mistrider Zipline, or you can rent an e-scooter from eSkoot Niagara to explore. If you’re in the mood for something slower, the Shaw Festival is a major draw for live performances. You can also visit places like Riverbrink Museum or Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre to explore local art.
