History

The story of Puddicombe House began in 1868, when prominent New Hamburg businessman Samuel Merner built the stately Italianate residence as his family home. Already a successful entrepreneur, Merner would later serve as a Member of Parliament before being appointed to the Senate of Canada. Twenty years later, in 1888, the property was purchased by Robert Puddicombe, whose family lived there for nearly 80 years and ultimately gave the house its present-day name. Following the family's ownership, the mansion was converted into rental apartments before falling into disrepair.

The home was brought back to life in 2004 when the Cressman family acquired the property and embarked on an extensive restoration to bring back its historic character. The carefully preserved mansion reopened as Puddicombe House, combining boutique accommodations, fine dining, and event spaces within the heart of New Hamburg. Surrounded by heritage landmarks, the property is among the town's Victorian-era icons, providing wonderful accommodations.

**Design and Architecture**

Constructed in 1868, Puddicombe House was designed in the Italianate style, a form of Victorian architecture that became popular across North America during the mid-19th century. Commissioned by Samuel Merner, the stately residence reflected the prosperity of New Hamburg during the period and remains one of the community's most recognizable heritage homes. Its low-pitched roof, wide overhanging eaves supported by decorative brackets, and tall, narrow windows are hallmarks of the Italianate style, lending the mansion an elegant yet understated appearance.

Since its restoration, the mansion has carefully preserved its historic exterior while adapting the interior for modern hospitality. Today, guests can still appreciate the home's Victorian character alongside contemporary accommodations, allowing Puddicombe House to celebrate more than 150 years of local history without sacrificing modern comfort.
