The world's largest log cabin hotel
US News & World Report Travel – Best Quebec Resorts, Ranked #5
Constructed in 1930 from 10,000 red cedar logs, Fairmont Le Château Montebello is the world’s largest log cabin and was once a private retreat for prominent figures. Food lovers can enjoy Aux Chantignoles’ refined Québécois cuisine or the seasonal riverside Le Grill, all with family-friendly options. Golfers can play the historic Stanley Thompson-designed course, while kayakers and cyclists explore the Ottawa River and trails. Winter turns the grounds into a snowy playground for skating, skiing, snowshoeing, or horse-drawn sleigh rides. The Fairmont Spa offers nature-inspired treatments, and the indoor pool, tennis, curling, and squash provide year-round recreation. With riverside event spaces and a historic ambiance, the Château is perfect for weddings or private celebrations, blending luxury with the great outdoors.

During the 1920s, Swiss-American entrepreneur Harold M. Saddlemire purchased land along the Ottawa River that had once belonged to the Papineau family and envisioned a private wilderness retreat for Canada’s most distinguished guests. Naming it “Lucerne-in-Québec,” he assembled a large team to develop the property, completing the lodge just months after construction began, even as the Stock Market Crash of 1929 shook the world.
The Seigniory Club opened on July 1, 1930, marked by a grand costumed ball three days later. The name honored the Séminaire de Québec, which had once owned the land. Canada’s elite quickly became members. Famous guests included Bing Crosby, Bette Davis, and Joan Crawford, while U.S. President Harry S. Truman visited in 1947 to fish for Canadian trout. Over time, the retreat expanded with tennis courts, a golf course, and recreational facilities, gradually becoming a full-scale resort.
In 1970, Canadian Pacific Railways opened the property to the public as Château Montebello. Fairmont Hotels and Resorts later took over operations, enhancing hospitality with fine dining, spa services, and conference spaces. The resort became a venue for cultural events, seasonal activities, and international gatherings, including the 7th G7 Summit in 1981, attended by several leaders. Today, Fairmont Le Château Montebello is recognized as one of Canada’s most iconic and exclusive wilderness retreats, preserving its history and legacy while welcoming today's travelers.
When Harold M. Saddlemire began planning his wilderness retreat along the banks of the Ottawa River, he imagined a lodge that would feel both grand and closely tied to the surrounding forest. To bring that vision to life, he commissioned Finnish architect Victor Nymark, who had already built a strong reputation for his rustic wood craftsmanship and approached the project with the same philosophy. Together with contractor Harold Landry Furst, a team of nearly 3,500 laborers completed the project in just four months.
The scale of the building itself was remarkable. More than 10,000 red cedar logs were transported from British Columbia to construct the main lodge and its surrounding buildings. Once completed, the structure stood as one of the largest log buildings ever constructed anywhere in the world. Inside, the layout follows a striking star-shaped plan with four wings extending outward from a vast central lobby. At the heart of the space stands a dramatic rotunda crowned by a three-story atrium. A towering fireplace anchors the room, with its chimney rising roughly 65 feet (around 20 meters) above the floor.
Throughout the building, cedar remains a defining element, from the hand-split roof shakes to the detailed wooden molding found across the interiors. Today, the hotel’s 210 guest rooms and newly introduced suites continue to connect with local Québécois culture. The property also includes specially designed accessible rooms to accommodate guests with mobility needs.
Aux Chantignoles serves as the hotel’s signature dining room, welcoming guests into a grand space that reflects the scale and character of the Château. The menu focuses on seasonal ingredients and regional flavors, with dishes that highlight local Quebec specialties alongside classic favorites. Guests can stop by for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, though Sunday brunch has become a long-standing tradition here. Both visitors and locals gather for a leisurely meal that often includes a generous spread of savory dishes, regional specialties, and house-made desserts. A dedicated kids' menu is also available.
Since the restaurant is popular with both guests and locals, reservations are highly encouraged.

Bar Le Foyer sits in the hotel’s main lobby and is one of the most recognizable spaces inside the lodge. Comfortable chairs surround the large six-sided fireplace that rises through the three-story red cedar hall, creating a warm place for guests. Today, the lounge remains a casual meeting spot where guests gather for a drink, conversation, or a quiet moment by the fire.

The menu keeps things simple, with easy, satisfying bites and refreshing drinks that suit a quick break during a game.
Golfers can even order directly from their cart, making it easy to grab something without stepping too far away from the course.

Le Grill is a seasonal dining experience that opens during the summer months on the hotel’s terrace overlooking the Ottawa River. The riverside terrace is especially enjoyable in the evening when guests can watch the sunset while dining outdoors.
The restaurant offers a family-style barbecue experience served in multiple courses. Meals begin with salads, followed by fish and shrimp, then selections from the grilled and smoked stations, and finally a variety of desserts. Guests can continue ordering dishes throughout the meal, creating a relaxed dining experience designed for sharing at the table.
Le Riverain is a seasonal outdoor dining spot that opens during the summer months. Located on the brick terrace just outside the Château, it offers a relaxed place to enjoy a casual meal in the open air. Guests can settle under a patio umbrella and take in the warm weather while looking out over the surrounding views.
The menu focuses on lighter fare and refreshing drinks, making it a pleasant stop for a leisurely lunch on a sunny afternoon.
Nymark draws inspiration from Victor Nymark, the architect behind the Château, and reflects that legacy through its thoughtful approach to dining. The restaurant blends traditional Québécois recipes with contemporary culinary techniques, creating dishes that highlight regional ingredients.
Inside, the space features subtle Art Deco influences. The menu places a strong emphasis on local products and sustainability, with a selection that also highlights organic Canadian wines and spirits. The restaurant is open Thursday to Saturday, and reservations are recommended in advance.
