History

The story of Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge begins in 1915, when the area beside Lac Beauvert was first developed as a simple tourist camp. Visitors arriving in the Rockies by train could stay in canvas tents and wooden cabins while exploring the surrounding wilderness of what is now Jasper National Park. Operations paused during the First World War but resumed in 1919, as interest in mountain tourism quickly grew.

A major step came in 1921, when the Canadian National Railway acquired the site and began transforming it into a proper wilderness resort. The official Jasper Park Lodge opened in 1922, designed as a village of log cabins scattered through the forest rather than a single large hotel building. That same decade saw the construction of the central lodge, built from massive logs and celebrated at the time as the largest single-story log structure in the world.

History

Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the resort steadily expanded with new cabins, staff buildings, and recreational facilities. One of the most notable additions was the championship golf course designed by famed architect Stanley Thompson, which opened in 1925 and soon became one of the most scenic courses in the country. By the early 1930s, the lodge had grown into a full resort community with dozens of log structures spread across the lakeshore.

In 1952, a fire destroyed the original main lodge, but it was rebuilt soon after. Over the decades, the lodge expanded with new cabins and amenities while preserving its early railway era heritage, and today it spans hundreds of acres along Lac Beauvert in the Canadian Rockies.

Design and Architecture

The design of Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge reflects a classic rustic architectural style that became popular in wilderness resorts across North America during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Instead of grand urban hotel forms, this approach favored natural materials such as timber and stone, helping buildings blend with the surrounding landscape and creating a stronger connection with nature.

Inspired by frontier cabins and alpine chalets, rustic architecture emphasizes sturdy wooden structures, wide roofs, and large windows that frame the surrounding scenery. At the lodge, this style can be seen in the use of log construction, wooden interiors, and stone fireplaces that create a warm mountain lodge atmosphere. Guest accommodations range from lodge rooms to spacious cabins and Signature Cabins, many overlooking Lac Beauvert or the surrounding forests.

While the property preserves its historic character, it also incorporates contemporary updates for comfort and accessibility. In addition to modernized guest rooms and cabins, the lodge includes specially designed accessible rooms that are ADA-compliant, ensuring that travelers with mobility needs can comfortably experience the resort’s alpine setting.
