History

The story of Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise goes back to 1890, when the Canadian Pacific Railway built a small wooden chalet beside Lake Louise. The railway company wanted to encourage travelers to explore the dramatic scenery of the Canadian Rockies, and the modest lodge served as a base for visitors arriving by train. The original building was simple and could host only about a dozen guests, mostly early tourists and mountaineers drawn to the surrounding peaks and glaciers.

In 1893, a fire destroyed the first chalet. Insurance funds allowed the railway company to rebuild it the following year. The new structure soon expanded as interest in the region grew. By 1896, the chalet had a second floor and room for about 20 guests. Even with the added space, the hotel often filled quickly, and some visitors camped near the lake because there were not enough rooms available.

In the early 20th century, the railway company expanded tourism around Lake Louise by building hiking trails, alpine routes, and tea houses. Swiss mountain guides were also brought in to lead climbs, helping establish the area as an early mountaineering hub in the Canadian Rockies.

History
Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise surrounded by natural beauty Agoda

A significant change came in 1912 when architect Walter Painter designed a new wing in an Italian villa style. This structure still forms the oldest surviving part of the hotel today. Another fire later damaged parts of the property in the 1920s, leading to the construction of the Barott Wing, which opened in 1925 and expanded the hotel to around 400 rooms.

The mid 20th century brought a quieter period as train travel declined. Interest in the region rose again with the growth of skiing in the Rockies. In 1982, the hotel began operating year-round for the first time. Renovations followed through the 1980s and 1990s, and a major expansion arrived in 2004 with the Mount Temple Wing, adding new guestrooms and event spaces. Today, the hotel continues welcoming travelers visiting Banff National Park and the surrounding alpine landscape.

Design and Architecture

Set along the shoreline of Lake Louise, Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise stands out as one of the most recognizable buildings in the Canadian Rockies. The hotel grew in stages over the decades, beginning with a modest chalet and gradually expanding into the large lakeside structure seen today. From the outside, the building stretches along the lake with multiple wings and rows of large windows designed to frame the surrounding alpine scenery. Its pale façade contrasts with the deep green forests and snow-capped peaks of Banff National Park.

Inside, the design highlights the natural setting. Many public areas are positioned to overlook the lake and nearby mountains, allowing the landscape to remain a central part of the experience. The hotel has 539 guest rooms and suites, designed with contemporary interiors while keeping the mountain surroundings in focus. Many accommodations look out toward the lake or the Bow Valley ranges.

A more exclusive stay is offered through Fairmont Gold, located on the seventh and eighth floors. This section functions as a hotel within the hotel, offering upgraded rooms, signature suites, and additional personalized services. Accessibility features are integrated across the property. Ramps are located throughout the building, and wheelchairs or portable equipment can be arranged upon request.
