Fairmont Banff Springs started as a bold vision in 1883 when William Cornelius Van Horne of the Canadian Pacific Railway noticed mineral springs in the Rockies and saw a chance to create a world-class hotel. Construction began in 1886 under architect Bruce Price, who drew on the Châteauesque style, and by 1888, the Banff Springs Hotel had opened, quickly becoming one of North America’s top mountain resorts.
Over the next decades, the hotel evolved to meet changing tastes. The iconic 11-story tower, designed by Walter Painter, added grandeur, though a 1926 fire damaged much of the property. Engineer John W. Orrock restored it, unifying its appearance into the stone and limestone façade guests admire today. Despite challenges like the Great Depression and a temporary closure during World War II, the hotel bounced back, reopening in 1945 and gradually reclaiming its status.
In the 1970s, the hotel became a year-round destination with winter activities, followed by renovations in the 1980s to modernize amenities. Ted Kissane’s leadership in the 1990s earned it the nickname “Castle in the Rockies,” and the addition of the Banff Springs Conference Center further enhanced its offerings. In 2011, it joined the Fairmont brand, becoming the Fairmont Banff Springs, a National Historic Site of Canada and a proud member of Historic Hotels Worldwide, continuing over 130 years of iconic mountain hospitality.
Originally developed by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1887, the hotel consists of two main sections: the main lodging area and the iconic 11-story tower. The main lodging area was the first to be built under William Cornelius Van Horne’s direction, with architect Bruce Price completing it in 1888. About 20 years later, architect Walter Painter designed the tower, which originally reflected Scottish baronial influences and Renaissance Revival-style interiors.
After a major renovation in 1927 following a mishap, engineer John W. Orrock replaced the wooden frame with steel, reinforced the structure with durable Rundle limestone, and unified the exterior into a cohesive Châteauesque-style design. Steep copper roofs, dormers, and gables now define the façade, giving the hotel the grand, castle-like appearance that has made it one of Canada’s most celebrated resorts.
Today, the hotel offers 724 guest rooms, including cozy standard rooms, spacious suites, and Fairmont Gold premium accommodations. Guests also have access to accessible rooms designed for comfort and convenience, making it easy for everyone to enjoy the breathtaking scenery and luxurious amenities of Banff National Park.
