Established on July 4, 1912, the Manila Hotel is perhaps one of the most iconic and enduring landmarks and historic hotels in Manila, Philippines. However, its inception dates back to 1898 when former Governor General of the Philippines, William Howard Taft, issued a decree to create an urban plan for Mainla. He enlisted the help of Daniel Hudson Burnham to draft a plan, which was continued by William Parsons in 1908.
To commemorate American Independence Day, Manila Hotel was formally opened to the public as announced on the Manila Daily Bulletin, now known as the Manila Bulletin. It was the first five-star hotel in the Philippines, quickly becoming famous among Manila's elite and was visited by an illustrious guest list. The hotel also boasted views of the iconic Manila Bay sunset lined with the palm trees of the nearby Luneta Park.

Manila Hotel was first renovated in 1935, when President Manual Quezon hired Andres P. Luna, son of painter Juan Luna, to lead the project. Some of Luna's changes included transforming the hotel's top floor into an elegant penthouse, creating the air-conditioned annex, and designing the Fiesta Pavilion. From 1935 to 1941, the penthouse of the hotel served as the primary residence of General Douglas MacArthur who served as the Military Advisor of the Philippine Commonwealth. The three-bedroom suite where he, his wife, and his son stayed at is converted into the MacArthur Suite, one of the premier rooms of the hotel.
The hotel was occupied by Japanese forces during World War II and suffered considerable damages, although restoration efforts helped regain its former grandeur.
Another renovation project took place in 1975, lead by National Artists for Architecture Leandro Locsin and Ildefonso Santos. The hotel's interiors were upgraded into lavish furnishings and amenities like a business library and a new tower wing were added. During the Marcos Administration, Manila Hotel became the favorite hangout of then-First Lady Imelda Marcos. It was said that whenever the First Lady visited, a red carpet and garlands were laid out.
The hotel has also been the site of numerous historic and political events. During the 1986 presidential election, Ferdinand Marcos' party held its convention at the hotel, while his rival Corazon Aquino delivered an important speech at the hotel which became a turning point in her campaign. Over the next years, Manila Hotel became the location of state banquets, cultural galas, and important national occasions.
With its illustrious history, Manila Hotel boasts an impressive guest list: from music icons like The Beatles and Michael Jackson to political figures like Bill Clinton.
Manila Hotel celebrated its centennial in 2012, introducing new and renovated facilities like a Health Club and bigger rooms to comply with modern hospitality standards. Then-president Benigno Aquino III served as the guest-of-honor. Today, Manila Hotel stands as a living monument to more than a century of Philippine history, representing the country's spirit of hospitality and resilience.
Spanning more than a hundred years of history, Manila Hotel's architecture is a reflection of the evolving identity of the Philippines and combines American colonial design and Filipino cultural influences. Its original design followed the Californian Mission style, a popular trend in the United States at that time. The hotel had a green tile roof with wide verandas, large windows, and high ceilings to encourage natural ventilation while providing protection from the heat and humidity.
Despite many restoration and renovation projects, the blend of American and Filipino design remain. Common spaces feature ornate chandeliers, brass fittings, and elegant wood paneling. Filipino design elements are seen with the use of narra, molave, and kamagong, which are local hardwoods that gave the hotel its distinct design. Many of these materials are also seen in the rooms and suites, which have been carefully preserved or restored over the decades.
Over the years, Manila Hotel has amassed a wealth of historical artifacts, photographs, and wartime memorabilia. These can be seen at the on-site museum or as decor in the rooms or common spaces.
Rooms and suites of the Manila Hotel continue to reflect classic elegance, Filipino cultural motifs, and modern comforts. It emphasizes timeless design elements like rich woodwork, intricate details, and locally sourced materials, proudly displaying the beauty of Philippine craftsmanship.
Its more than 500 rooms feature warm color palettes that match with the dark wooden accents, creating a cozy yet regal atmosphere. Walls are adorned with traditional art pieces and vintage photographs, while plush armchairs, marble-topped desks and gilded mirrors add a luxurious flair. The high-end lodgings and executive suites offer a larger space with windows that provide sweeping views of the Manila skyline. Each room feels like stepping back in time, with modern amenities integrated for maximum convenience.
Meanwhile, hard-carved wooden panels, patterns inspired by the banig (handwoven mat), capiz (shell)-inlaid decor and traditional patterns used in beddings and wall art are a nod to Filipino heritage and culture. These elements celebrate local identity while maintaining a luxurious standard.
