Overview

Casa Vallejo proudly hails as Baguio City's oldest surviving hotel, dating back to 1909. Originally built as a dormitory during the American colonial period, it has since evolved into a heritage hotel steeped in history and charm. With pinewood interiors, colonial architecture, and sweeping views of the mountains, Casa Vallejo offers an intimate stay that blends rustic elegance with cultural richness. Home to the acclaimed Hill Station restaurant, it offers a medley of cuisines and is the perfect setting for romantic getaways, celebrations, and intimate events. With a legacy spanning more than a century, Casa Vallejo invites guests to experience the soul of Baguio, where heritage lives on in every nook and cranny.

History

Perched on Baguio City's ridges, Casa Vallejo is a witness to over a century of Philippine History. The hotel was built in 1909 and was originally known as "Dormitory 4," housing employees of the Bureau of Public Works, a government agency responsible for infrastructure development. Its function evolved over the years, particularly in 1917, when the building served as a temporary detention center for German prisoners of war.

In 1923, a Spanish immigrant named Salvador Vallejo leased and converted the property into a hotel, giving it a new name: Casa Vallejo. Aside from being a landmark of the city, the hotel played an important role during World War II, where it served as a refuge for hundreds of foreign refugees. Casa Vallejo also survived carpet bombings during the Battle of Baguio, an event that destroyed much of the city.

The Vallejo family reopened the hotel after the war, cementing its role in the city’s hospitality landscape. Over the decades, Casa Vallejo became a cultural anchor in Baguio, serving thousands of guests who want to escape to the acclaimed Summer Capital of the Philippines.

Casa Vallejo might have survived countless bombings, but its existence was not without challenge. In 2014, an Ibaloi family claimed that they had ancestral land rights to the site, prompting an eviction order for the current tenants. This caused concern from preservationists and loyal customers who feared that the building might be demolished. The issue spurred public outcry and led to conversations about indigenous rights versus conservation of heritage properties. Eventually, this crisis was averted due to legal intervention and public support.

As a result, Casa Vallejo was formally recognized as a national historic site, and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines bestowed a heritage marker on the hotel in 2019. Today, Casa Vallejo stands proudly as Baguio’s oldest operating hotel, giving guests an opportunity to experience the past while enjoying the comforts of the present.

Design and Architecture

Built in 1909 during the American colonial period, Casa Vallejo's design reflects the practical yet graceful design sensibilities of that era. Its structure was originally conceived as a government dormitory, which explains the straightforward layout and utilitarian form. Yet over time, it has become a standing example of American-period mountain architecture, much like other preserved and restored sites in Baguio City.

At its core, Casa Vallejo is a wooden structure framed with native pine, galvanized iron, and sawali, a traditional woven split-bamboo mat. These local materials made building the hotel easier and well-suited to Baguio’s cool climate. Large windows and generous overhangs are hallmarks of its design, offering ventilation and protection from heavy rains and mountain sun.

Inside the hotel, the architecture is modest but atmospheric, combining rustic details with clean colonial elements. Wooden balustrades, vintage fixtures, and colonial-style window shutters maintain the building’s authenticity.
