Miramar Hotel

1034 - 1036 Roxas Boulevard, Ermita, 1000 Manila, Philippines

Overview

Established in 1932 during the Philippine Commonwealth, Miramar Hotel remains an enduring icon of Manila from the early 20th century.  Back then, it was called the Miramar Apartments, where the city's elite lived in sought-after luxury residences. Nearly a century later, the building has been renewed to its classic Art Deco splendor, with spaces and accommodations decorated in stylish vintage furniture. They even restored the original elevator, said to be the first and oldest in operation in Manila! Miramar Hotel's location is also one of the best in the city, as it's close to major attractions such as Luneta Park and Manila Ocean Park, as well as major transportation hubs like Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

History

Back in the 1930s, three enterprising brothers - Antonio Rosado, Manuel Rosado, and Jose Rosado - sought to create a residential apartment catered to Manila's elite. For the project, they commissioned a civil engineer named Enrique Sto. Tomas to design the structure, and ensure it also fulfilled their promises of comfort and extravagance. The building was completed in 1932, christening the apartments as Miramar, which meant 'sea view' in Spanish, because of its bayside location.

It was very much sought-after for its central location, with many places nearby where those from high society gather. These include the Elk's Club and the Army and Navy Club, as well as both the Bay View Hotel and the Manila Hotel.

In the past, the apartment building featured a roof garden where residents held parties and gatherings. The residences had fancy porch areas, spacious living rooms and dining rooms, and even designated quarters for servants. For its decor, Engineer Sto. Tomas made sure to design it with the trendiest Western styles at the time, foremost being Art Deco.

Design and Architecture

Nearly a century later, the Miramar was no longer the posh hub of high society it once was. Shifting trends and the tides of time had taken a toll on what was once a symbol for Manila's elite. Fortunately, the building was brought back to life in 2009, undergoing refurbishments that not only modernized facilities, but also restored its Art Deco aesthetics.

Its exterior facade is an eye-catching combination of Western Art Deco with Spanish Colonial touches. This style continues into the interior spaces, with sleek patterns and colors complemented by tropical elements such as ceiling fans and potted plants. The same could be said of the guestrooms and suites, as each sports handsome Style Moderne furnishings that look like they belong in a classic Hollywood movie set.

Events and Experiences

Cultural Experiences

One of the major draws for Miramar Apartments back during the Commonwealth was its convenience to key administrative and leisure centers in Manila. In modern times, Miramar Hotel still sports the same advantage, with many wonderful attractions within walking or commuting distance. The closest is Rizal Park, just around the corner from the hotel. This historic site was called Bagumbayan and was the execution ground for the Filipino National Hero, Jose P. Rizal.

If you're traveling as a family with children, the Museo Pambata, or Children's Museum, is across the street. It has plenty of exhibits and hands-on experiences that are sure to be eye-opening. There's also the Manila Ocean Park, featuring performances, up-close encounters, and plenty of photo sessions with aquatic creatures from all over.

Events and Other Celebrations

Whether if it's for private celebrations or corporate gatherings, Miramar Hotel has venues available. They have a business center for small discussions, but there's also the Mezzanine Conference Room and the Art Deco Function Room if you require a larger space. For intimate dinners such as for birthdays or anniversaries, you may instead get in touch with the management and see if you can reserve a section of Bistro M.
