History

Situated in Killadeas, Northern Ireland, the Manor House Country Hotel was originally part of an ancient church grounds before it became country estate. It wasn't until 1660 that it became Rockfield, when the land was acquired by Captain John Irvine. It became the Killadeas Manor House when the Captain's descendant, Major John Irvine, took over in the 1835. His son, Col. J. G. Irvine, commissioned a substantial renovation of the manor in 1860, bringing Italian craftsmen all the way to Ireland. These artisans created the ornate interior detailing that remains visible to this day.

During World War II, the house was requisitioned by the government and became the headquarters for the nearby Killadeas seaplane base. Although it was returned to the Irvine family after the war, they decided to sell the estate in 1957, and the property was promptly converted into the hotel we know today. Operating for over 70 years now, Manor House Country Hotel has claimed numerous awards, including The AA's most prestigious distinctions, five Silver Stars.

Design and Architecture

The Manor House Country Hotel is known in Northern Ireland as one of the finest examples of Victorian‑Italianate architecture. It was originally known as Rockfield when it was acquired by the Irvine family in 1660, then renamed the Killadeas Manor House by Major John Irvine in 1835. The actual transformation into the ornate Victorian‑Italian edifice we see took place in 1860, when Colonel J. G. Irvine rebuilt the house. He brought over Italian craftsmen who worked on the interior decor and architecture, led by the famed architect William Armstrong. Though only two stories, the manor has a distinguished facade embellished by its three‑arched loggia, and a square tower with belvedere features.

Its interiors are equally grand, reminiscent of Italian palazzos, set with marble statues, carved filigree, and pilasters set along the halls and portals. While the rooms are dressed in wholly contemporary themes, certain areas of the hotel embrace vintage and period aesthetics, particularly the dining spaces.
