Culloden Estate's story began in 1876 when the Belfast stockbroker and Justice of the Peace, William Auchinleck Robinson, established for himself a splendid villa on the city's outskirts. He commissioned it to be built in the Scottish Baronial style, a popular and romantic design during the era, and christened it after his wife, Elizabeth Jane Culloden. With his wealth and influence, he was able to build an authentic Scottish manor, even importing stones from Scotland. Upon Robinson's passing in 1898, the estate became the official residence for the Lord Bishop of Down, Connor and Dromore. Of the four bishops who lived in the estate, the most famous is John Baptist Crozier, who became the Archbishop of Armagh.
Ownership of the estate became tenuous during the 20th century, until it was acquired by hotelier Sir William Hastings in 1967. Just the year before, he established Hastings Hotels by purchasing Stormont and Adair Arms Hotels, and with Culloden, was on his path to forging his hospitality empire. Later in 1996, Culloden would become Northern Ireland's first five-star hotel, cementing its place among the world's finest establishments.
Although situated in Northern Ireland, William Auchinleck Robinson envisioned Culloden as a Scottish Baronial estate, with gleaming walls and impressive towers of Gothic architecture. He commissioned Young & Mackenzie Ltd, an architectural firm in Belfast that already had a renowned reputation. Perhaps as a way to flaunt his wealth and influence, or to remain true to the vision of his dream home, he chose to import stone from Scotland by ship to build his villa.
The exterior of the manor exudes medieval romanticism, featuring a firm facade of stonework, carved with arches and crenellations. Upon entering, however, guests are struck by the stark yet lovely contrast; interior spaces are livened by luxurious details such as lush carpets, dramatic lighting, and meticulous plasterwork. These are further complemented by various architectural conventions that hearken to its time as a bishop's palace, with elements like colorful stained glass windows, tall ceilings, and detailed marble fireplaces. For its accommodations, the hotel embraces a much more contemporary aesthetic, featuring furnishings with chic retro-modern vibes. To also address the needs of travelers, the hotel has three designated accessible rooms that are equipped with wheelchair-friendly features.

As part of the Hastings Hotels brand, Culloden Estate and Spa observes and executes brand-wide sustainability policies. Hastings' Go Green program has proven successful and has garnered Green Tourism accreditations for properties such as Grand Central Hotel and Stormont Hotel. Culloden Estate is also striving to achieve this respected distinction and operates with sustainability and environmental protection in mind.
Examples of Culloden's commitment to sustainability include the use of a high-tech Building Management System (BMS) that monitors and controls energy usage throughout the property. The hotel also uses Combined Heat and Power (CHP) units, meant to not only generate electricity but also recapture and redistribute wasted heat. When it comes to energy usage from lighting, some spaces have motion sensors that switch off lights when idle.
Logistics also plays a major part in pollution, and the brand has taken steps to reduce fuel consumption, emissions, and ease pressures on procurement. They carefully choose local partners with similar sustainable practices, which reduces supply transport distances and ensures the freshness of ingredients. Food waste is also diverted from landfills and instead brought to anaerobic digestion facilities. Cleaning is another contributor to contamination; thus, the company has since switched to fully using environmentally friendly chemicals and products throughout its hotels.
