20 Corick Road, Clogher, Clogher, United Kingdom, BT76 0BZ
Corick House Hotel & Spa is quietly set on the border of Tyrone and Fermanagh, in the beautiful Clogher Valley. This area has been lived in for thousands of years and is full of ancient standing stones and old burial sites. The land is mostly farmland rising into gentle hills, and the property sits where the Fury River meets the Tyrone Blackwater. The name Corick, or Corag, means “a meeting of streams.” In 1610, during the Plantation of Ulster, the land was given to the Bishop of Clogher.
Around 1697, John Story from Hexham in England came to live here, working as the Bishop’s agent. John and his son Thomas Story built the first mansion on the land and gradually added more property. The Story family stayed connected to Corick for about 300 years, working as agents, clergymen, and farmers. During the 1800s, the Story family enhanced the estate by planting trees and building a walled garden.
In 1863, William Story brought in the Belfast architect Sir Charles Lanyon to enlarge and modernize the house. The renovations added a grand garden front with a large bay and a three-story Italian-style tower, while the original dining room remained unchanged. The property changed hands in 1994 when Mrs. Jean Beacom bought the house and gardens, opening it as a nine-room guesthouse in 1996. Her aim was to preserve the traditions of this Irish country house. Today, her daughter Avril and sons Haldene and Andrew continue this work, improving the house while maintaining its history and welcoming atmosphere.
Corick House Hotel & Spa is a fine example of a traditional Irish country house with a mix of classical and Italianate features. The exterior is striking, with its grand garden front, large canted bay, and three-story tower topped with a hipped slate roof. Stone walls, tall sash windows, and manicured gardens reflect the careful attention given by the Story family during the 19th century. Mature trees and the walled garden add a sense of timeless charm.
Inside, the house showcases period elegance with high ceilings, original fireplaces, and decorative cornices. The dining room retains its original layout, offering a sense of continuity. Bedrooms balance heritage details with contemporary touches, providing comfort without losing the house’s story. Modern updates, such as the indoor swimming pool and spa facilities, have been thoughtfully added to enhance guest experience. Large windows throughout invite natural light and showcase views of the surrounding countryside, making the design feel connected to both history and nature.
