Before becoming the Terrass" Hotel, the building was home to a brasserie, and beside it was an unused lot. Edmond Hurand, owner of the Élysée Montmartre cultural venue, acquired these properties in 1911 and built on them the first of what would become his hotelier portfolio. A century later, his descendants continue the enterprise under the hotel brand Biografy, of which Terrass" remains part of.
As Montmartre was a hub of emerging cultures and subcultures in Paris, Terrass" often played host to many notable guests over the years. These include personalities such as the feminist writer and novelist Colette, and French cinema leading man Pierre Brasseur.
Despite the decades, Terrass" has maintained its identity, and remains a reminder of the Hurands' beginnings. The signature panoramic restaurant on the top floor is a dedication to its founder, Edmond. As for preserving its classic aesthetics, the family has entrusted it to the architect Muriel Gaz, who has since given the hotel its unique personality by blending the contemporary and traditional.
As the first ever of Biografy's hotels, Terrass" Hotel holds a special place in the hearts of the Hurand family that runs it. While the Haussmann facade and other exterior elements have been well-maintained, the interior and decor require updates to their styles and fashion every few decades or so. This endeavor has been entrusted to the architect Muriel Gaz, who in the most recent major renovation coordinated with the construction and design firm Atelier JV, and the design consultancy Creative Supply. Their vision was to create a hotel that embodied the artistic values of Montmartre while also utilizing the family legacy of the Hurands.
The resulting transformation created the Terrass" Hotel we see today. Its stylish and sublime spaces hearken to the years when the hotel was an artists' haven, attracting the likes of Colette, Dali, and Renoir. They reimagined their meeting venues into a place not just for business, but for creative minds to gather, adding vibrant colors and biophilic touches. They named the top-floor restaurant after Edmond Hurand, founder of their hotel brand. Here, guests from different backgrounds can gather and mingle, perhaps even collaborate, amidst the dazzling interiors inspired by Art Deco and Art Nouveau conventions.
As part of their commitment to welcoming guests from various walks of life, the hotel offers rooms with accessibility features for those with mobility impairments and vision impairments. These include signs with visual aids such as Braille, and wheelchair-friendly bathrooms with lowered sinks.
