Tulloch Castle Hotel crowns the hills above Dingwall, where sweeping Highland views meet centuries of history. Step inside to explore the Clan Davidson Museum, wander through the 250-year-old panelled Great Hall, or peek into the vaulted dungeon and secret tunnel, all of which are filled with fascinating tales. Carefully restored by Ken and Margaret Macaulay, the castle keeps its heritage alive while inviting guests to enjoy the Turrets Restaurant’s hearty Highland fare or relax with a whisky by the log fire in the Green Lady Bar. Outside, adventures await, from spotting playful dolphins in the Moray Firth to discovering Inverness, Loch Ness, and the rugged Highland landscape. Tulloch Castle promises a Highland escape full of history, adventure, and breathtaking views.
Tulloch Castle has roots stretching back to the 12th century, with the Bains and later the Clan Davidson claiming its lands. Some believe Norsemen may have built the original structure during the Viking era, though the first recorded ownership comes from the Bayne family in the 16th century. It later passed to the Davidsons, making it the legendary birthplace of Clan Davidson. Over the centuries, the castle has seen dramatic fortunes, housing six generations of Davidson lairds, including Duncan Davidson, an MP admired by Queen Victoria, and Elizabeth, whose ghost, the Green Lady, is said to roam the halls.
By the late 20th century, Tulloch Castle was at risk of falling into serious disrepair until Ken and Margaret Macaulay purchased the estate and lovingly restored it. They carefully preserved its historic character while updating it for modern living, repairing the ancient stonework and other original interiors. Today, guests enjoy a unique opportunity to stay in a place where legends, ghost stories, and centuries of family history come alive.
Tulloch Castle tells its story through the way it rises above the hills of Dingwall, each part of the structure reflecting a different era. Much of its historic character has been kept intact, from the 250-year-old panelled Great Hall to original fireplaces and carefully restored ceilings. The Victorian Gothic exterior stands proudly, but the castle’s roots stretch back through earlier additions. The east wing was built in 1665, and its 17th-century plaster ceilings still survive.
The early 20th century added a clean layer of design, with a rebuilt roofline, stronger window stonework, and new lighting that showed off the older rooms without taking away their character. The east wing was given sharper detailing, and the south front gained carved pediments and a panel with the Davidson of Tulloch arms. These updates created a more cohesive exterior while still respecting the castle’s varied architectural origins.
Inside, the panelled Great Hall, original fireplaces, stained glass windows, ornate staircase, and vaulted dungeon highlight different architectural periods. Modern interiors fit neatly within the historic structure, while the views of the Cromarty Firth and the Black Isle complete the experience.
