Norton House Stay & Spa, built in 1840, became notable in 1883 when John Usher of the famous Scottish brewing family purchased it. In 1951, the house eventually became a Hand Picked Hotel and got a fresh lease of life. Guests can relax in elegant suites, savor 2 AA Rosette dining at The Brasserie, and enjoy seasonal Afternoon Tea. The award-winning spa and hydrotherapy facilities provide ultimate relaxation, while accessible gardens and extensive grounds offer scenic walks and peaceful spots. It hosts weddings, private celebrations, and seasonal experiences, from festive packages to summer treats. Green Tourism-accredited, it reflects a commitment to sustainability and sits close to Edinburgh’s top attractions, whether you want history, culture, whisky tasting, shopping, or outdoor adventures.
Norton House Hotel & Spa was built way back in 1840, though the first few decades are a bit hazy. Things started to change for the hotel in 1883 when John Usher from the famous Scottish brewing family bought it. He probably liked it because it is just a stone’s throw from Edinburgh, and it was the first estate he ever owned.
Right away, you will notice the ornate Renaissance porch outside. That is the main clue that the Ushers once called this place home. John Usher was a man of strong beliefs and integrity, devoted to the Unionist cause. He became the first Baronet of Norton and Wells in 1899. His eldest son, Robert, stepped in as the second Baronet after John’s sudden death in 1904 and even expanded the estate by buying Rathboyes.
Later, Colonel Sir John Usher, the third Baronet, made Norton House his favorite spot. When he passed away in 1951, the house was sold and turned into a hotel, although the family kept the farms nearby. Through all these years, it has always been a warm and welcoming place. Today, as a Hand Picked Hotel, it still has that quiet elegance, beautiful surroundings, and the perfect vibe to relax and enjoy yourself.
Step inside Norton House Hotel & Spa, and the interiors are full of surprises. You’ll notice a mix of architectural styles, from liver-colored marble pillars to the oak-paneled staircase hall with its gallery on the half-landing. Delicate ceilings, the striking Renaissance porch, and intricate William de Morgan tiles add a touch of elegance throughout.
On the ground floor, details range from Jacobean to neo-Adam, with hints of newer influences visible throughout. In the residents’ lounge, formerly the dining room, you’ll find an oak dado, a charming chimneypiece, and elegant William de Morgan tiles. The drawing room next door still shows its original green-and-gold ceiling, beautifully preserved.
The house and gardens are thoughtfully designed for accessibility. Gravel and tarmac paths make it easy to move around, and both the front and walled gardens are wheelchair friendly. Several spots throughout the gardens have accessible seating, allowing everyone to enjoy the surroundings.
