In a building that once buzzed with newspapers and stories shaping Scotland, the Scotsman Hotel now invites travelers to experience Edinburgh in a fresh way. Opened in 1902 under architects Dunn and Findlay, the building was thoughtfully restored in the early 2000s, preserving its character while updating it for modern stays. Today, the hotel offers a mix of unique experiences, from a hidden Art Deco cinema and cozy bars to a luxurious penthouse suite and Highland tours. Dining is a highlight, earning the prestigious AA Rosette for culinary excellence, along with many other global recognitions. Seasonal events, festive celebrations, and curated city experiences let travelers enjoy both the history within the walls and the culture of Edinburgh outside.
The Scotsman Hotel sits in a building that once shaped the news of Scotland. The story starts in the late 1890s when the building took shape on North Bridge, right between the Old Town and the New Town. By the time it opened in 1902, it already stood out as a landmark. Architects Dunn and Findlay designed it with real ambition, and because James Leslie Findlay’s family owned the Scotsman newspaper, the whole newsroom moved into the building soon after it opened.
For almost a century, the building worked as a full newsroom. Guests today are often surprised to hear how lively it once was. The famous Scotsman Steps beside the building even became a small icon in its own right. After years of neglect, they were redesigned in 2011 by artist Martin Creed, who used a different marble on every step. Travelers often stop here just to see this little burst of color in the middle of the city.
In 2001, the newspapers moved to Holyrood, and the building finally had space for a new beginning. It soon transformed into The Scotsman Hotel, earning international recognition, including a spot on the Condé Nast Traveler list of top hotels in the world. The hotel has also been honored with Best Luxury Hotel Interior Design from the Luxury Lifestyle Awards, Scotland’s Leading Hotel in 2012, and Scotland’s Leading Hotel Suite in 2007 from the World Travel Awards. While a few ghost stories linger, what truly stands out is how the hotel keeps its history alive.
The Scotsman Hotel has a look that naturally draws attention. Its front is detailed with carved stonework, tall columns, and generous windows that fill the inside with daylight. Sitting right on the North Bridge, it plays a big part in shaping Edinburgh’s skyline. Although the original structure dates back to 1805, the hotel later received a thoughtful redesign led by Lori Morris and her team, who used high-quality materials like rich stone, marble, soft fabrics, and elegant upholstery to give the building a refined feel.
A lot of the historic character is still easy to spot. You can see it in the wood-panelled rooms that stretch from floor to ceiling, the impressive marble staircase, and the stained glass that brings a warm glow to shared spaces. The hotel’s 82 rooms and suites all have their own layout because they were once offices, and share high ceilings and wide views over the Old Town, New Town, or Calton Hill.
The interiors lean into gentle tones of grey, cream, and pale oak that match well with the building’s original brick and wood accents. At the very top, the penthouse offers extra touches like a roll top bath, a sauna, and a private balcony that looks out over the city. Together, these details create a setting that feels historic yet fresh, letting travelers experience Edinburgh’s essence with a touch of luxury.
