The Caledonian began as Edinburgh's grand railway hotel, situated in the central district next to Princes Street Station, under the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. Opened as Princes Street Station Hotel in 1903, it served travelers from all over, providing luxurious stays, fine food, and lively merriment. Over a century later, The Caledonian continues its excellent traditions of hospitality as part of the famed Hilton Curio Collection. Impeccable guest rooms and suites will be your home away from home, while its restaurants serve delicious Scottish cuisine and international favorites. Close to the hotel are numerous cultural and historic attractions, including Edinburgh Castle, the National Gallery of Scotland, and many more.
The Caledonian Edinburgh, affectionately known as “the Caley” to locals, is one of Edinburgh’s iconic landmarks from the 20th century. It was part of the Caledonian Railway Company's project to construct a fancy station hotel along the west end of Princes Street. Building it took four years, from 1899 to 1903, then opening as the Princes Street Station Hotel. It stood out from Edinburgh's gray cityscape because of its rose-colored sandstone facade, and with its convenient location, welcomed countless travelers visiting by rail. Taking advantage of its central location, it also became one of the city’s premier venues for fine dining and social gatherings. In 1925, the hotel expanded with The Pompadour restaurant, which remains open to this day.
The decline of rail travel in the mid-20th century, brought about by developments in other forms of transportation, eventually forced Princes Street Station to close in 1965. Rather than fade with the station it serviced, the hotel adapted to the changing times by expanding into the former station's spaces. Additional guest rooms and elegant public areas were built while integrating old elements such as the old station's clock.
Hilton's acquisition of the hotel in 2000 again brought new life to the property, rebranding it as part of the brand's Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts portfolio. Historic details were restored while modern amenities were added. New spaces like Peacock Alley were even introduced as tributes to its railway past. Another rebranding in 2024 brought The Caledonian Edinburgh into Hilton's esteemed Curio Collection, cementing its reputation as a unique and luxurious stay.
From the outset, The Caledonian was conceived to be a grand, eye-catching destination synonymous in value and importance with Prince Street Station. Built between 1899 and 1903 by the firm of architects John More Dick Peddie and George Washington Browne, the then Princes Street Station Hotel was designed to sit atop the V-shaped terminus of the city’s railway station. The convention of linking a railroad station to a grand hotel was both practical and lucrative, which made Princes Street Station Hotel a notable icon of Edinburgh for that period.
For its exterior, the hotel was made in the Renaissance-Revival style, with elements leaning toward Flemish influences. Its facade was crafted from a rosy red sandstone, which made the hotel stand apart from its surroundings. Rising five stories tall, with additional attic levels, it also towered over its neighbors along Princes Street. Designs adorning the exterior included giant pilasters and Corinthian columns, creating a sense of esteem and importance, as if it were an administrative building of the government.
Having undergone recent renovations to modernize amenities, The Caledonian still preserves its historic character by integrating them into the guest experience. Structural and decorative hallmarks, such as the grand staircase and The Pompadour's French salon architecture, have been improved upon instead of replaced. Guestrooms also contain touches of old-world grandeur with contemporary takes on classic furniture such as canopy beds.
