Long before Edinburgh became the capital of Scotland in the 15th century, the region already had an established presence of noble manors and castles, likely to defend against English incursions. Melville Castle Hotel was one of these estates, with a history dating back to 1155 and originally named Malleville after its owner, Baron Galfrid de Malle. Today, Melville Castle is recognized as a Category A heritage building by Historic Environment Scotland and thus a cultural treasure. It has operated as a hotel since 2003, providing stunning historic accommodations amidst a lush, well-tended estate. It's also a popular venue for gatherings and celebrations, loved for its fairytale-like woodland setting.
Melville Castle Hotel's earliest recorded history dates back to the 12th century, when it was known as Malleville. Its name was derived from the Anglo-Norman noble family that lived on the estate, led by Baron Galfrid de Malle. It changed hands over the centuries, and in 1561, it was used by Queen Mary Stuart as the residence for her French retinue.
The castle's current incarnation was constructed in 1786 and completed in 1791. The estate's owner, Henry Dundas, the 1st Viscount of Melville, commissioned the architect James Playfair, who then designed the castle in a Gothic Revival style. Unfortunately, Playfair and Dundas chose to demolish the older castle rather than integrate it into the new one.
By the latter 20th century, Melville Castle had fallen badly into disrepair. The Hay Trust acquired the estate in 1993 and meticulously restored the property, eventually opening it as a hotel in 2003. Currently, the castle is managed by the Originals Collection hotel brand, which acquired the lease in 2021.
Melville Castle Hotel owes its aesthetics to James Playfair, a prolific Scottish architect active in Scotland and England during the latter 18th century. Despite being known for his Neoclassical style, Playfair actually designed Melville Castle with Gothic Revival architecture. He applied elements such as castellations and gray stonework, which were commonly seen on medieval ramparts and towers. Symmetry was also a convention popular during this era, which Playfair generously applied and is quite apparent on Melville's turreted facade and two wings.
Providing a sharp contrast to the cool, gray exteriors are the castle's vibrant interiors. Halls and common spaces are lined with colorful wallpapers, shiny fixtures, and Neoclassical touches like Greek columns. Period furniture and sleek wood finishes further enhance the old-world charm and create a nostalgic atmosphere. Likewise, the accommodations offer a refined and fanciful blend of classical and contemporary aesthetics. Antique furnishings, especially those with ornate four-poster beds, give each room an air of opulence while retaining their warm and comforting ambiance.
One of the oldest trees on the estate was said to have been planted by an Italian named David Rizzio, the purported lover of Queen Mary Stuart.
