Macdonald Houstoun House is a quirky yet absolutely charming estate, featuring a historic setting amidst the rolling fields of the Scottish Lowlands. Guests will find everything they need and want here for their holiday retreat. Accommodations blend historic ambiance with contemporary comforts, while the vast grounds provide plenty of opportunities to unwind. Book a spa day to rejuvenate your body or take a refreshing dip in the swimming pool. You can grab some Scottish gourmet delights at Tower Restaurant, and relax with a cup of afternoon tea after a hike around the area. If you've got a big celebration in mind, the hotel also welcomes events such as wedding parties and receptions.
The origins of Macdonald Houstoun House date back to 1598, when it was built by Sir John Shairp, the King’s Advocate, who had acquired the lands back in 1569. It was first constructed to be an L-shaped manor, though a later expansion turned it into the square tower we see today. An older structure was said to have stood on the site of the current house - a tower once visited and used by Mary, Queen of Scots. Aside from the main building, the estate also had associated structures, such as the "woman house" situated opposite of the tower.
The next major expansion was a stair-tower that was added to the north gable in 1737. The estate also accumulated a range of associated buildings, such as stables, a coach house, garden walls, and a historic sundial. By then, Houstoun House was no longer a fortified estate but a grand home of Scotland's elite.
Fast forward to the 20th century, and the estate was turned into a hotel, with expansions done during the 1970s and 1980s. Even back then, it was considered a luxury getaway as the establishment already boasted its own spa and leisure club. The hospitality tradition continues to this day, and Macdonald Houstoun House welcomes visitors from all over the world who have come for a lovely vacation.
Macdonald Houstoun House's main heritage aspects are drawn from its 16th-century tower house, from which the rest of the estate’s architectural identity is defined. The tower features a harled stone exterior coated in white, making it stand out against the expansive lawns and woodlands of the estate. Behind the main tower is a courtyard and the “woman house” building, regarded as the oldest surviving structure of the estate and older than the tower house. Elsewhere on the property stands a 17th-century dovecot, which is also recognized by Historic Environment Scotland as a building worth preserving.
While the hotel's 73 guestrooms feature a mix of historic rooms and current-day additions, the overall aesthetics strive for a balance of old-world charm and modern comforts. Among these, the signature suites on the upper floors of the tower boast the most historic atmosphere. Each one is decked in finery and decorated with antique furniture and period items.
