Ever wondered what it's like to live in one of Norway's rocky islands? STØTT is a restored historic trading post situated on the Helgeland Islands, up on Norway's northwestern coast. This magnificent escape offers a charming, secluded atmosphere surrounded by the Atlantic. Comprised of buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, you'll feel like you're staying in a village instead of a hotel. Here, you'll dine on wondrous Norwegian seafood and play in its enchanting natural beauty. As a hub for outdoor adventures, you'll have plenty of activities like kayaking, fishing, and hiking. And because of its closeness to nature, STØTT also safeguards its sanctity and thus well-regarded for its Eco-Lighthouse accreditation.
Støtt began as a fishing community on the islands off the Helgeland coast, providing a sheltered harbor for those traveling the waters for their livelihood. Records of the village date back as far as 1530, though it would take a few more centuries before the small community actually grew. In the late 1700s, Støtt was granted a royal licence to operate as a trading post, and soon after developed its own economy. Through the 1800s, the village became a bustling coastal hub with a general store, bakery, lodgings, and buildings for processing fish.
Originally part of the domain of Norwegian noble families, Støtt passed into the hands of multiple merchant families in the 19th century. Early on, it was managed by Anna Elisabeth, daughter of Christer Sverdrup from Kjerringøy, then later passed to her sister Kristiane Bolette. A merchant named Hassel bought Støtt from the Bolettes, then later in 1897 sold it to Johan Sørensen.
As maritime technology modernized, the trading post fell into gradual decline. It would take until 2012 when Sørensen's descendants' major restoration efforts transformed Støtt into a heritage-based destination. Historic buildings were carefully refurbished and adapted into guest accommodations, a restaurant, and a small museum, preserving the village's old character for modern travelers.
The architecture of STØTT is represented through its three historic guesthouses. Originally, these buildings were for commercial or industrial use, but the 2012 refurbishments brought them back as charming abodes for travelers.
Stabburet
Recognized as the oldest surviving building in Støtt, Stabburet was a storehouse from the 1700s. Much of the trading posts bulky goods, such as grain and food stocks, were kept here, along with lumber used for ships and buildings. Today, Stabburet is a cozy two-story guesthouse, with a ground floor that has a living room and toilet, and a second floor which has the sleeping quarters. Its old woodwork exudes a nostalgic atmosphere, reminiscent of idyllic rural paintings from centuries past.
Rorbua
Rorbua was historically the accommodation that the local fishermen used when staying at Støtt. Though simple, the cabins provided ample shelter and amenities that let them sleep comfortably, prepare food, store supplies, and mend their equipment. Despite refurbishments, the house retains its authentic interiors, resulting in an ambiance that hearkens back to the trading post's heydays.
In its modern incarnation, Rorbua was split into two sections: Rorbua Nord and Rorbua Sør, each with its own rooms, living areas, and bathrooms. This configuration makes it a fantastic choice for moderately-sized families or groups traveling together.
The Bakery
The bakery was a crucial part of Støtt during its years as a trading post, providing fresh bread to travelers stopping by, especially the fishermen. Although it burned down in 1878, the bakery was immediately reconstructed after a merchant named Gotaas sailed to Åsvær and bought that island's bakery, bringing it back with him to Støtt.
The restored Bakery we see today is considered the premium lodging at STØTT, featuring double rooms and a deluxe suite. Despite the luxuries, it still retains much of its classic look, combining nostalgic heritage with modern comforts.

STØTT's Restaurant Gammelbutikken is situated in the Old Store building of the trading post, providing an immersive historical ambiance. Diners can savor their food amidst the beautiful old woodwork, with many of the trading post's original architecture and decor intact. The dinner service is led by a host, who will not only discuss the day's menu but also share stories of the island and other locales.
The menu offered at Gammelbutikken is both practical and traditional, using classic recipes and ingredients abundant around the region. Try some beloved delicacies such as kveite cheviche and laksetartar to broaden your culinary horizon. During peak travel seasons, particularly the summer, menus are fixed and offered as 3-course dinners on most days, and a hearty 5-course dinner on Saturdays. Outside the busy months, the staff can be more flexible and address the diets and palates of their guests. They kindly request guests to inform them well in advance about allergies and other restrictions.
For a truly unique location for your destination wedding, come take a look at what STØTT has to offer. While it can be considered unusual, this rocky island wedding might just be the perfect and unforgettable celebration you, your beloved, and your friends and family will fondly look back on.
Due to STØTT's size, you'll have to book the whole venue as exclusive-use, which pretty much means the accommodations and the rest of the village. This would very well still fit your vision of a grand celebration with many guests or a small, intimate ceremony with your closest family and friends. Included with your bookings are the assistance of a dedicated events team, as well as catering prepared by in-house staff. They can also arrange other aspects of the event, such as the music, decor, and even dancing outdoors.
While secluded because of its island location, the geography also makes STØTT the perfect place for outdoor adventures along Norway's Helgeland Coast. There are plenty of ways to get around the archipelago if you'd like to explore. Boat rentals are best if you're looking to try some fishing and wildlife watching, though kayaking and sea-rafting are fantastic choices if you prefer going at your own pace.
For the land journeys, you can take a guided trip around the islands, especially if you're going birdwatching. There are also a few historic sites from World War II, such as the nearby artillery battery built by German forces. For downtime days when you'd rather relax, STØTT has an on-site Fisheries Museum with exhibits and memorabilia about the island's heritage. The hotel also provides opportunities to catch the Northern Lights, right outside the door or perhaps up the nearby hill.
STØTT coastal setting and warm hospitality makes it a lovely venue for company conferences and private events. The main venue is the on-site Fisheries Museum, which features a historic space with authentic old architecture, decorated with memorabilia of Støtt's heritage and local art. With the help of a dedicated events team, the space can also be livened with elements like decor and music. Apart from the function itself, guests staying at STØTT are encouraged to pair their retreat with outdoor adventures, such as boat trips, fishing, hiking, and island exploration.
STØTT’s sustainability program is built around the principle of developing the historic island trading post on nature’s terms. Every major step STØTT takes is certified under the Miljøfyrtårn (Eco-Lighthouse) scheme. This considerable effort requires continuous reporting and improvement in areas such as energy use, waste management, purchasing, and pollution prevention. The goal is to turn STØTT into a high-value destination with minimal environmental impact.
STØTT enforces strict measures to safeguard local flora and fauna, especially the sensitive birdlife. Alongside this endeavor, other initiatives are in place to reduce waste, and lowering energy consumption. In order to preserve the island’s cultural heritage, STØTT restores and repurposes the original buildings of the old trading post, reducing resource use while integrating local history into the stay experience.
