Grand Hotel Egersund, built by merchant Gabriel Gabrielsen in the 1870s, remains a proud part of the town’s history. Its careful restoration earned both Eigersund’s Architecture Preservation Award and the Heritage Association’s Preservation Award. Guests enjoy lavish 6-course dinners and visit the old wine cellar for private tastings. Just outside, the cobbled streets lead to cozy cafés and small boutiques that make shopping here a pleasure. The hotel also sits at the gateway to the UNESCO Global Magma Geopark, where ancient landscapes invite exploration. A proud member of De Historiske Hotel & Spisesteder, it continues to celebrate sustainability, local food, and Egersund’s vibrant summer festivals like the Dalane Blues and the Vise Festival, along with charming Christmas celebrations.
The Grand Hotel Egersund first opened in 1878 when Herman Danielson started Hotell Jæderen, a lively place that hosted one of Egersund’s biggest early events, the railway opening breakfast that same year. Back then, it stood among the city’s few fine hotels until a big fire in 1896 wiped it out. Danielson rebuilt from scratch, giving it a fresh start and a new name, Grand Hotel, when it reopened in 1897.
Through the years, the hotel saw new owners, fires, and rebuilds, yet it always found its way back. Olufine Skjæveland ran it from 1923 and became known for her kind nature and strong will. Even when another fire hit in 1926, she brought it back by the next year, stronger than before. During the war, the building was taken over by German officers, but after that, it returned to being a true town hotel again.
By the 1990s, Grand Hotel was growing, joining nearby buildings and blending old timber with newer designs. The restorations were done so carefully that they earned national awards for preservation. Later expansions added more rooms and kept old elements like logs from 1895 and sea charts from the 1800s as part of the décor. In 2019, the hotel added Eigra Kitchen & Bar, giving locals and travelers a new place to gather.
Grand Hotel Egersund still carries that old soul in its walls. The place is made up of ten connected wooden buildings, each with its own look and story. You’ll see pieces of history everywhere, old maps on the walls, warm colors, bits of old wood mixed with modern touches. Every room feels different depending on which building it’s in, and regular guests often ask for the same one each time.
Inside, the buildings are linked together, so you can wander from one part to another without stepping outside. There are 101 rooms in total, plus a restaurant, a wine and cocktail bar, a wine cellar, and cozy meeting spaces. All rooms have wooden floors, a small work desk, and a private bathroom. Some are allergy-friendly, and there are rooms made for guests with limited mobility who need easier access. It’s an easy mix of old charm and today’s comfort.
