Kronen Gaard Hotel began in 1898 as a simple country house built by timber merchant Gabriel Block Watne, and over the years, it has grown into a historic retreat. With its cozy Swiss chalet style, wooden details, Sandnes stone, and beautifully restored heirloom furniture, the hotel reflects its rich history. Guests can enjoy seasonal menus at the on-site restaurant or Sunday dinners bursting with local flavors. Considered one of Norway’s top historic stays, the hotel embraces sustainability through locally sourced ingredients, bokashi composting, and Miljøfyrtårn-certified eco-friendly practices. Perfect for weddings, corporate events, and celebrations, the hotel also offers seasonal events, outdoor adventures, scenic hikes, canoe trips, and hands-on kitchen theater, Kronen Gaard turns every visit into an experience worth remembering.
Kronen Gaard Hotel traces its beginnings to 1898, when timber merchant Gabriel Block Watne bought seventeen acres (6.8 hectares) from his parents' farm at Vatne and built a simple country house. Gabriel, his wife Beate, and their six children spent their summers here, turning the home into a lively family retreat. When the economy declined around 1920, the Block Watne family chose to sell the property.
Not long after, the estate passed to Frans Salerius Faydt, an Austrian who had moved to Norway in 1911 to avoid military service. He worked as a master weaver and raised his two young daughters here. His wife died during childbirth, and his own passing followed soon after, which led to another sale of the property.
A new chapter began when Head Nurse Gudrun Baade Jensen from Dale Psychiatric Hospital purchased the estate. She transformed the farm into a quiet home for elderly women who needed a peaceful place to recover. That chapter continued until 1953, when Kjell and Sygni Steinsvag arrived and took over the institution, keeping it running as a private facility.
By the time the 1980s came around, Rogaland Psychiatric had leased the property and operated it as a nursing home. Everything shifted again in 1986, when Kjell and Sygni decided to create what would become Kronen Gaard Hotel. They renovated the old buildings, reopened the doors, and the place quickly became a friendly gathering spot. Until 1993, the hotel remained an alcohol free venue. Later that year, their son Helmer Steinsvag stepped in as the new owner. With the hotel receiving its liquor license the same year, Kronen Gaard moved into a fresh chapter in its long story.
The yellow main house was the very first home the Block Watne family ever built, so you could say the whole Block Watne story really starts right here. The place has that cozy Swiss chalet vibe, with wide eaves and warm wooden details. Sandnes stone, wood, and brick give the hotel its down-to-earth look, and a lot of the furniture comes from local families who restored their old pieces and gifted them to the property.
The hotel also showcases the Block Watne family’s legacy. Gabriel Watne, who built the house, lived in Langgata, and the slate that once paved that street now lines parts of the garden. His grandson, Gunnar Block Watne, crafted custom furniture still featured in the Block Watne Suite.
A newer addition is the Orangery, which opened in the summer of 2023. It brings in a lot of light and feels like a fresh chapter for the hotel, and it is also the first step in a bigger plan to grow the property in a thoughtful way. The Orangery and main areas are wheelchair accessible, so everyone can enjoy without any barriers.
