Lodalsvegen 22, 6789 Loen, Norway
Hotel Alexandra's story began over a century ago in 1884, when Anders Markusson Loen opened an inn along the fjord called Loen’s Hotell. Tourism in the area remained underwhelming, and the enterprise floundered for a while until Anders’s son, Markus, returned from America with his wife, Ida. Together, the couple revitalized the business and eventually acquired the neighboring Kvamme’s Hotel. By 1892, they combined the two establishments and renamed it Hotel Alexandra.
Under Markus’s leadership, the hotel expanded steadily and became a focal point for tourism in Loen, offering also transport and excursions. Following Markus’s death in 1929, Ida and their nine children continued the family tradition, with their son Richard taking over as director in 1934. The hotel saw major growth during this period, including a major expansion that same year, turning it into one of Western Norway’s largest tourist hotels. More modernizations came about during the mid-20th century, with the oldest parts of the building replaced or upgraded in the 1960s. These developments allowed the hotel to shift from seasonal to year-round operations. Through the 1970s and 1980s, Alexandra continued improving its facilities with new rooms, conference spaces, and leisure amenities.
By 1984, its centennial anniversary, Hotel Alexandra had grown into a substantial enterprise with dozens of family shareholders. Despite its scale, however, Hotel Alexandra remains independent and still family-run, now led by the fifth generation members.
Hotel Alexandra’s architecture represents over a century of enterprise and expansion, evolving from a small inn founded in 1884 into a multi-wing hotel that helped shape its locale. While the original buildings have long since been transformed into grand, modern structures, the family that started it and their traditions stayed the same.
Early additions to the hotel included a new dining hall and tower in 1891, a salon wing in 1906, and a much larger dining hall in 1913. A major step came in 1934 with the four-storey east wing, which introduced modern amenities such as private bathrooms with hot and cold water, and balconies.
As the hotel grew and technology progressed, larger transformations took place. The north wing was constructed during the 1950s, while the 1960s saw the total replacement of the oldest sections with a modern building suited for year-round operation. Through the 1970s and 1980s, Alexandra added conference spaces, leisure facilities, and landscaped outdoor spaces.

For electricity, the hotel uses power supplied by local hydroelectric plants, while heating is sourced from the geothermal activity of the fjords. Cooling, on the other hand, uses seawater processed through a heat exchanger, rather than traditional cooling devices. This results in certified zero greenhouse-gas emissions for heating and reduced overall energy consumption.
Other ways the hotel helps the environment and local economy involve prioritizing local companies for building projects and sourcing local produce for the restaurants. Waste sorting is also part of the daily operations, properly sorting food, plastic, paper, glass, metal, along with using environmentally certified detergents and cleaning agents.
