Bergen has long been loved as one of Norway's hubs for culture, much of which was brought about by its role as a major trading city during the time of the Hanseatic League. Today, it is recognized as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, while its historic Bryggen Wharf docks district is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guests visiting Bergen can't go wrong with booking at Grand Hotel Terminus, a historic hotel situated next to Bergen Station, the city's central railway terminal. From the hotel, travelers will have easy access to many of Bergen's amazing cultural and heritage spots, including the many museums and restaurants nearby. So treat yourself to a fun and delicious holiday at Bergen, Norway.
Affectionately dubbed as Bergen’s Grand Old Lady, the Grand Hotel Terminus was built as an icon of the city's civic pride and culture. It was established in 1928 in conjunction with the National Exhibition, an event intended to showcase progress and innovation in Bergen. The opening was symbolic, providing Bergen with its very own “Grand Hotel,” giving locals and visitors alike a prestigious venue for dining, events, and holidays. The hotel gets its name from its location, which is right next to Bergen's central train and bus station.
The Grand Hotel Terminus is also home to another piece of Norwegian history, the Amundsen Bar & Bistro. The bar has since been rechristened in honor of Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian explorer who reached the South Pole. It was here that Amundsen made his last press conference before embarking on his fateful final Arctic expedition.
In 2012, the hotel received official recognition from Riksantikvaren, the Directorate for Cultural Heritage. This Grand Hotel Terminus was designated an “outstanding example of modern hotel architecture from the 20th century,” highlighting its significance and importance to Bergen's heritage.
After taking 13 years, the most recent refurbishment of the Grand Hotel Terminus was completed in 2019, wherein retouches and new additions were made. Instead of transforming the hotel, it has retained its heritage features, such as the classic exterior facade and sleek hallways lined with wood finishes.
Architectural firm Claesson Koivisto Rune's aim was not only to modernize, but also to integrate these historic features into the overall identity of Terminus. For example, internal windows were incorporated into Amundsen Bar & Bistro, making a visual connection while maintaining a sense of privacy and exclusivity. The chalky-green facade's color has also been adapted as a running theme in the hotel's many guestrooms. The furniture and decor feature a mix of various eras, including contemporary, vintage, and classical. However, the hotel's various antique items from 1928 were sent for restoration, ensuring they remain part of the hotel's charm for years to come.
