History

Gloppen Hotel started out as a tiny local business back in 1853, when Joachim Sivertsen got permission to sell beer and run a small shop on the land where the hotel sits today. In 1866, he finally received a hotel license, and that became the beginning of what people knew as Sivertsen Hotell. His family kept adding to it over the years, and by 1925, the main expansions were in place. For five generations, Sivertsen Hotell stayed with the Sivertsen family and became a familiar stop for travelers and salmon anglers heading to the Gloppe River.

After some years with different owners, K. Strømmen Lakseoppdrett bought the property in 1988 and hired Dag Moen to run it. A few years later, in 1994, Dag and his wife Irene bought the place themselves and gave it the name Gloppen Hotel. They spent a long time bringing the building back to its older character and paying more attention on food made with care. Things really picked up when chef Bodil Fjellestad Eikrem returned home in 2007. With her, the hotel built its own production kitchen and started taking in whole animals and fresh produce from local farmers, fishermen, and hunters. That move toward honest, local food really changed things and helped the hotel grow into a steady year-round operation.

When Dag passed away in 2013, their sons Preben and Dag Håkon stepped in as the next hosts. They have carried on the same hands-on approach and preserved the old details that tell the hotel’s story. The hotel also took over the Gloppe River fishing rights in 1996, and summer still feels the same as anglers return year after year. Even with all the changes in owners, names, and generations, the hotel has always stayed close to its roots and the traditions that shaped it.

Design and Architecture

Gloppen Hotel’s historic building is designed in the Swiss style, a popular form of northern European wooden architecture from the mid-19th to early 20th century. The style is evident in the high foundation walls, gables, large roof openings, and carved ornamentation that give the building its distinctive character. Inside, many rooms feature period-inspired décor, combining antique furniture, lace curtains, and wallpapers reflecting 19th-century patterns. The hotel was expanded in the 1970s with a room and conference wing, reflecting the functionalist architectural trends of the time with a more robust, practical design.

In 2011, a new conference wing was added, connected via an intermediate glass building that allows the historic hotel to retain its original proportions. All rooms in this section were refurbished in 2015 to provide modern amenities, including allergy-friendly rooms, wheelchair-accessible bathrooms with handles, and an elevator, all while remaining in harmony with the older structures. The new addition features a simplified, contemporary design with muted colors. The interior throughout preserves the traditional touches, creating cozy spaces with fireplaces, hunting trophies, and photographs that reflect the hotel’s connection to its guests.

Gloppen Brygg

Gloppen Brygg is the hotel’s own microbrewery, which started as Norway’s smallest, tucked in the hotel's basement. As production grew, it moved to a larger space in the building behind the hotel in the back garden. Dag Håkon Moen manages the brewery as well as the hotel’s food and beverage operations and oversees the brewing of the hotel’s signature beers, which are considered some of the best in the region.

Events & Experiences

Cultural and Outdoor Experiences

Gloppen Hotel offers plenty to do for those who want to taste, explore, and experience the best of the area. In the hotel’s award-winning kitchen, guests can get hands-on with local cuisine. The chef shows how dishes and sides are made, shares stories about the food, and includes tastings and even a fun food quiz. There’s a “golden onion” up for grabs for the winning team. It’s a playful way to learn about Nordfjord’s flavors and take a piece of the local food culture home.

Fishing has long been part of the region’s traditions. Over 130 mountain lakes are full of trout, salmon swim in lively rivers, and the fjord is rich with fish. Casting a line in the Gloppen River or nearby lakes gives a true taste of the outdoors, with peaceful surroundings, flowing water, and fresh mountain air making every catch feel special. For those who prefer a bit more adventure on the water, kayaking on the fjord is another way to explore the area. Gliding along calm waters, paddlers can admire the mountains and forests from a different perspective, spot wildlife, and soak up the tranquility of Nordfjord.

For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Trivselsskogen Forest is just a short walk from the hotel. Trails wind through the forest, from flat paths to gravel and bark trails, with a few stairs for a small challenge. Nordfjord Aktiv offers guided hikes and mountain biking, while the nearby bike center has jumps, banked turns, and trails for all levels, making it a fun outing for friends or family. The Park at River Walk is another local gem that has an amphitheater surrounded by water and hosts various live music performances, making it a lively spot to relax and enjoy local culture.

In winter, Harpefossen brings adventure on the slopes with groomed trails. There’s a children’s area for the youngest skiers, so everyone can enjoy the snow safely. For a quieter, more immersive experience, Hjortegarden in Ålfoten sits tucked into nature, where visitors can explore forests, rivers, and canyons, meet animals, and experience local food and hunting traditions. Majestic deer roam freely across the land, giving a true sense of Nordfjord’s wild and beautiful landscape.

Other Celebrations

Gloppen Hotel can host conferences, meetings, and private gatherings for up to 100 people, with rooms of different sizes and all the equipment needed for presentations. Smaller rooms and booths are also available for group work. For larger events, the hotel collaborates with the nearby Trivselshagen Culture Center, just two minutes away, which can hold up to 300 guests. The welcoming atmosphere and local food make it easy to combine meetings or gatherings with outdoor activities, cultural experiences, or team-building exercises.
