Eikum Hotel began in 1919 when Brita and Per Eikum turned an old house from the Tang farm into a tiny guesthouse. Over four generations, the family rebuilt, expanded, and modernized this heritage hotel in Norway, even recovering from a major fire in the 1950s, to become the welcoming hotel it is today. The restaurant continues the century-old tradition of Norwegian cuisine, including the hotel’s famous Himmelpuddingen. In 2019, a jubilee book celebrated 100 years of family history. From the hotel, a short trip brings you to Sogn’s mountains and fjords, including the Molden hike, Lake Hafslovatnet, waterfalls, Urnes Stave Church, and Jostedalsbreen glacier, making it easy to explore the region’s natural beauty, culture, and historic landmarks.
Eikum Hotel’s story began in 1919 when Brita and Per Eikum bought an old house from the neighboring Tang farm and turned it into a small guesthouse, calling it Eikums Hotel. Back then, it was tiny, just a couple of beds, with simple rooms and a cozy feel. By 1927, the place had grown enough to take on a new name: Eikum Gjestgiveri.
In 1956, the hotel had 15 rooms when disaster struck, a fire tore through the building, destroying much of the hotel and four other nearby buildings, including the town hall. But the family didn’t give up. A year later, the hotel reopened with 19 rooms and 35 beds, ready to welcome guests again.
The 1970s brought a new wing and renovations to the old rooms, giving every guest a shower and washroom. In 1980, a new dining room opened, big enough for around 200 people. Since then, the hotel has kept growing, updating old rooms and adding new spaces. In 2019, the hotel celebrated a major milestone with the publication of a jubilee book to mark its 100th anniversary. The book captures a century of family history, memories, and the story of Eikum Hotel.
Eikum Hotel showcases traditional Norwegian architectural style with a warm and historic atmosphere that immediately feels welcoming. Nestled in the beautiful Norwegian countryside, the hotel is surrounded by a serene garden where guests can unwind and enjoy nature. The hotel has 62 rooms, including some located in the house next door, a historic building that dates back to 1877, which adds a sense of heritage.
Rooms are designed with comfort in mind, including allergy-free options, and a lift makes it easy to move around. Over the years, Eikum Hotel has evolved from a small 1919 guesthouse into a historic family-run hotel, growing through expansions, renovations, and modern updates while preserving its traditional Norwegian character.

At Eikum Hotel, food has always been a big part of the experience. It started back in 1919 with Brita, Ståle’s great-grandma, who cooked proper home-style meals, and the family has kept it going for over 100 years. Ella, Ståle’s grandma, and Aud, his mom, carried on the tradition—homemade meatballs, roasts, soft cakes, and of course, the hotel’s famous Himmelpuddingen, which has been the trademark of Eikum all the way back to its humble beginnings.
Today, the restaurant serves fresh, locally sourced food that’s all about real Norwegian flavors. You’ll find everything from reindeer stew, gravlaks, and Himmelpudding to pork roast, beef roast, soft homemade cakes, and Queen Maud dessert. There’s also seafood, meats, and vegetarian options, plus a few international dishes. The vibe is warm and inviting, and the staff makes sure every meal feels special.
The hotel also has a bar, perfect for winding down after a day exploring Hafslo. It’s cozy, with friendly staff, and you can sip on cocktails, a wide selection of local and international beers, or a nice glass of wine. There are also snacks and light bites, making it great for a casual evening with friends or a quiet date night.
Staying at Eikum Hotel puts you right in the heart of some of Norway’s most breathtaking landscapes and experiences. One of the most popular adventures is the hike to Molden, where the views from the top are absolutely stunning, giving you a panorama of fjords and mountains you won’t forget. For something easier, the gentle hike from Hafslo to Solvorn is perfect for adults, kids, and even seniors, letting everyone enjoy the scenery without pushing too hard.
Waterfall lovers can head to Feigumfossen, one of Scandinavia’s tallest waterfalls with a dramatic 218-meter free fall, or explore Helvetesfossen and the wide Futespranget waterfalls along the historic Kongevegen road between Hafslo and Sogndal.
Lake Hafslovatnet is another must-visit, where the calm waters are perfect for fishing, whether you’re after trout, otters, dace, or even sturgeon. You can also enjoy a peaceful walk along the shore or simply relax and take in the reflections of the surrounding mountains.
For views closer to home, try the hike to Tvangen for a great overlook of Hafslo, or head to Setålen, “the needle from Hafslo,” an intermediate hike suitable for adults and children alike. And when winter comes, Sogn Skisenter at Heggmyrane offers fun for the whole family, whether you’re skiing on groomed slopes or free skiing the fresh snow.
The area is full of history and culture too. Urnes Stave Church, Norway’s oldest and most richly decorated stave church, is a short trip away. You can also explore Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier in Europe, just an hour from the hotel, or wander through the village of Veitastrond, surrounded by mighty peaks and right next to Jostedalsbreen National Park. Of course, you can also simply soak in the charm of Hafslo itself, a small, picturesque village in Luster, where you can wander, relax, and enjoy the local life.
Eikum Hotel knows how to celebrate the holidays in style, and they host festive Christmas events that anyone can join. From Christmas tables and cozy lunches to the big Christmas party, the hotel brings people together with over 50 years of experience in making the season feel special. Guests can enjoy homemade hot and cold dishes, a great dessert table, and plenty of music to dance to.
