Finnegaardsgaten 2 A, Bergenhus, Bergen, Norway, 5809
The story of Det Hanseatiske Hotel is tied to Finnegaarden, one of the historic merchant buildings in Bergen’s Bryggen district. First recorded in 1403, Finnegaarden was a bustling Hanseatic trading house used by German, Dutch, and Norwegian merchants for centuries. It handled all manner of trade goods, including dried fish, grain, leather, and hides. The large building also served as a residence and workspace for traders. For its importance, it was rebuilt after the devastating 1702 fire that almost totally destroyed Bergen. It is actually part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bryggen Wharf, and stands as one of Bergen’s best-preserved reminders of its Hanseatic heritage.
The building eventually passed to the Lude family in the mid-1800s and is still owned by their descendants today. Its conversion into a hotel is more recent, opening only in 2006. The establishment began with 16 rooms, but gradually expanded to the current 37, all while maintaining the building’s historic aspects.
Det Hanseatiske Hotel is part of Finnegaarden, a former Hanseatic trading house in Bergen’s UNESCO-listed Bryggen district. Although the current building dates back to around 1702, it was able to preserve its centuries-old aesthetics thanks to the dedication of its owners. Renovations were done with preservation in mind, keeping original timber walls and the traditional wharf-style architecture that defines the district. Other historic elements include exposed wooden walls, narrow passages, and the distinctive layout of Late Medieval and Renaissance Era Hanseatic merchant buildings.
For its interiors, particularly the accommodations, the hotel embraces the individuality and character of each room. Each has its own shape and style, keeping the irregular geometry of the original layout intact. Many integrated the rustic timber walls and supports, while furnishings feature a traditional style with leather accents. At the same time, fixtures and amenities are very much modern, creating a blend of historic charm and contemporary convenience.
Though Det Hanseatiske Hotel is a boutique establishment, it provides ample options for dining with its two on-site restaurants.
