Trondheim prides itself as one of the finest cities in Norway, home to famous landmarks such as the Nidaros Cathedral, an esteemed work of Gothic architecture, and where Saint Olav the Holy is entombed. The city is also a center of modern pop culture, with museums like Rockheim and the annual Olavsfest. Situated near all these cultural centers and happenings is the Britannia Hotel, a historic hotel from 1870 known for impeccable service and exquisite stays. Here, you'll sleep in luxurious rooms dressed in sleek vintage-modern styles and dine on Michelin-recognized cuisine. Moreover, you can celebrate memorable milestones or join the incredible seasonal events at their bespoke venues.
Britannia Hotel's story began in 1870, when hotelier Andreas Myhre acquired a manor farm near Trondheim's port district. He opened the property as a lodging establishment for British elites who had come to Trondheim for fishing and adventure. Because of this exclusive clientele, he christened his hotel Britannia and boasted English-speaking staff. Myhre's wife Cecilie Ingbertine Debes took over the hotel upon his passing, and in 1888 commissioned architect Karl Martin Norum to transform the property into a then-modern hotel. This new Britannia Hotel reopened in 1897, now featuring a stylish Art Nouveau design, which we still see today.
For its prestige and high-society clientele, the hotel welcomed esteemed personages such as Norwegian royalty King Haakon VII and then-Prince Olav V. Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, also stayed at the hotel in 1969.
By the start of the 21st century, Britannia Hotel started on a path of decline, but was rescued by Norwegian billionaire and philanthropist Odd Reitan in 2015. He funded a full restoration of the property, bringing back classical elements while updating amenities and services. The project took several years, and in 2019, Britannia Hotel reopened once again as an exemplar of luxurious hospitality.
Britannia Hotel's design comes from its 1897 expansion, which was led by architect Karl Martin Norum. Though Norum is remembered for building traditional churches in the Dragestil style, he also designed many stone structures that feature a dignified Art Nouveau architecture. Britannia Hotel is one of these splendid Art Nouveau edifices, purposely built in a style meant to impress British standards.
A century later, the restoration led by new owner Odd Reitan and design firm Metropolis Arkitektur & Design drew upon its history and links to Britain's elite. Spaces like the lobby and the ensuite bathrooms of the accommodations were decked in Italian marble and arranged in mesmerizing monochrome. To restore classic elements, moldings were taken from the original woodwork's beading and paneling, then carefully recreated with new materials.
Mindful attention was given to Palmehaven, the 1918 banquet hall, and Speilsalen, the Mirror Hall. The designers even collaborated with Trondheim's historians to faithfully recreate the restaurants' original floor patterns. For their efforts, Britannia Hotel was awarded a Protected Status by the Norwegian Ministry of Cultural Heritage for its architecture and historical significance.
