Durbar Marg, Kathmandu., Thamel, Kathmandu, Nepal, 1016
Long before welcoming travelers, this site was already at the heart of Nepal’s Rana era grandeur. In 1885, Maharaja Bir Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana commissioned an elegant palace complex in Kathmandu, setting the tone for what would later become one of the city’s most storied addresses. His nephew later added Lal Durbar, also called the Red Palace, further establishing the family’s presence in Kathmandu during the Rana era.
In the 1950s, a charismatic Russian adventurer named Boris Lissanevitch arrived in Kathmandu and opened the Royal Hotel, home to the original Yak and Yeti restaurant. It quickly became a gathering place for diplomats, royalty, and early international visitors discovering Nepal.
Building on that success, Boris partnered with Radhe Shyam Saraf to transform Lal Durbar into Hotel Yak and Yeti. After several years of careful planning and restoration, the hotel officially opened on September 27, 1977, coinciding with World Tourism Day, and marked Nepal’s entry into the five-star hospitality scene. Expanded in the early 1990s, the property continues to preserve its palace roots while welcoming guests into a living piece of Kathmandu’s history.
Hotel Yak & Yeti is set within the historic Lal Durbar Palace, a 19th-century Rana-era landmark whose neoclassical and palace-style architecture anchors the entire property. The palace’s grand façade and interiors reflect the Ranas’ preference for elegant, classical lines and spacious layouts, with a majestic entrance hall softly lit and lined with portraits of prominent figures from the period.
The original palace structure was thoughtfully preserved when the hotel opened in 1977 and in later expansions. The newer wings were designed to harmonize with the existing architecture, mirroring features of Lal Durbar so that historic and modern elements coexist seamlessly. Inside, original architectural details remain key to the hotel’s character. Wide halls, high ceilings, and ornamental features set the tone, while spaces like The Chimney restaurant, housed within part of the old palace, retain their historical charm.
To support all guests comfortably, the property offers wheelchair accessibility features, including lifts/elevators and accessible pathways, along with wheelchair-accessible parking and assistance options to help visitors move through its heritage environment with ease.
The Chimney Room at Hotel Yak & Yeti feels lively yet refined, set within part of the historic Lal Durbar Palace. You can dine inside the original Chimney space or step out to the relaxed terrace lounge if you prefer fresh air. The menu brings together Asian and Western influences, so you will find familiar classics alongside creative fusion plates. With seating for around 110 guests, it works well for intimate dinners as well as group gatherings.
On the menu, dishes like Pan Seared Bhetki come plated with fondant potato, glazed capers, tomato, and a grainy mustard sauce. Seafood lovers often go for the Jumbo Prawns Shashlik, marinated with a chef’s special blend inspired by an old Russian recipe.
Opening hours: 12:00 pm to 10:30 pm (daily)
The Spice Room at Hotel Yak & Yeti is tucked within landscaped gardens and carries a calm, refined atmosphere. Soft lighting and elegant interiors set the tone for a dining experience centered on Indian cuisine. The chefs highlight regional diversity through thoughtfully developed recipes, drawing on seasonal ingredients and traditional spice blends that reflect different parts of India.
The restaurant opens for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with generous buffet spreads in the morning and at midday. In the evening, the focus turns to an à la carte selection of kebabs, layered curries, and regional specialties. With seating for 96 guests, the space feels polished yet comfortable, whether you are planning a relaxed dinner or a celebratory evening out.
Opening hours: 6:30 am to 9:00 pm (daily)
