During the Rana Dynasty's rule of Nepal, they built numerous personal mansions and palaces to flaunt their influence and power. Hotel Shanker was one of these estates, commissioned by General Jit Shumsher Rana, brother of Maharaja Sir Bir Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, and completed in 1894. Like many of the Ranas' palaces, it featured European architecture and was built using imported materials. After Jit Shumsher’s death in 1913, the estate passed into the hands of General Maharajkumar Agni Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana. Several members of the Nepalese royal family were also born in the palace, including Queen Aishwarya, Queen Komal, and Princess Prekshya.

In 1964, an astute businessman named Ram Shanker Shrestha leased the former palace, then known as Agni Bhawan, and converted it into a hotel. As the palace was kept in impeccable condition, it launched with 23 splendid rooms, with its halls and spaces retaining their original splendor.
