History

During the Rana Dynasty's rule of Nepal, they built numerous personal mansions and palaces to flaunt their influence and power. Hotel Shanker was one of these estates, commissioned by General Jit Shumsher Rana, brother of Maharaja Sir Bir Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, and completed in 1894. Like many of the Ranas' palaces, it featured European architecture and was built using imported materials. After Jit Shumsher’s death in 1913, the estate passed into the hands of General Maharajkumar Agni Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana. Several members of the Nepalese royal family were also born in the palace, including Queen Aishwarya, Queen Komal, and Princess Prekshya.

In 1964, an astute businessman named Ram Shanker Shrestha leased the former palace, then known as Agni Bhawan, and converted it into a hotel. As the palace was kept in impeccable condition, it launched with 23 splendid rooms, with its halls and spaces retaining their original splendor. Through the decades, Hotel Shanker has maintained its quality and heritage charms, attracting guests from all over the world looking for immersive and luxurious stays while visiting Nepal.

Design and Architecture

When Hotel Shanker was first built in 1894, it was designed in a combination of European styles like many of the palaces of the Rana Dynasty during that time. The exterior was fashioned in a neoclassical style and used materials imported all the way from Europe. These included things like velvet fabrics and marble for the structure and decor. Other items, such as gilded mirrors and sunburst chandeliers, decorated the halls and rooms, creating an opulent atmosphere.

Even though the palace was adapted as a hotel, it retains much of its historic features. Windows and doors are embellished with ornate arches, while the landscaped gardens are presented as a small, well-tended paradise. The accommodations tend to be on the contemporary side, creating a pleasant contrast with the period decor and historic architecture.

Cultural and Outdoor Experiences

Around Hotel Shanker, guests will discover plenty of cultural and historical spots to visit. The district of Thamel is one of the focal points for visitors, featuring numerous shops, food spots, as well as bars and music venues. It's also home to the Garden of Dreams, a neoclassical garden built in the 1920s and now open as a public park. Not far from the garden is Narayanhiti Palace Museum, a former royal residence and now one of Nepal's largest museums. The city is also home to the Kathmandu Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, comprised of holy grounds such as Basantapur Durbar Square, Swoyambhunath (Monkey Temple), and Pashupatinath Temple.

Like their Indian neighbors, festivals are also deeply important to the Nepalese. Dashain is Nepal’s longest and most significant Hindu festival, spanning 15 days and filled with rituals like the tika ceremony, as well as flying kites and visiting temples. Teej is a festival celebrated mainly by women and is rooted in devotion to the Goddess Parvati, marked by fasting, singing, dancing, and group visits to temples such as Pashupatinath.
