Yamanoo has been offering warm hospitality to travelers since 1890. Its first owner was Ota Takichi, a connoisseur. He was so talented that famous artist Rosanjin referred to him as "the most famous man in the Hokuriku region, a state guest of Kanazawa, and a great figure in the tea ceremony." Rosanjin was a frequent visitor and always appreciated Takichi's hospitality.
Kanazawa, during that time, was a center of cultural and artistic activities. Naturally, the ryokan attracted gourmets, tea masters, and connoisseurs from different parts of Japan. This included industrialist and tea master Masuda Donno. Eventually, the ryokan passed over to Hoshioka Saryo, who diligently maintained his predecessor's legacy. Over the years, the ryokan underwent several changes, while keeping its true essence intact. The property was even renamed Kanazawayamanoo at one point. Yamanoo is currently owned by Motoya Tatsuya, who belongs to the fifth generation of owners.
Design and Architecture
The ryokan's Meiji-era architecture has been beautifully preserved by the owners. On top of that, modern enhancements have been made to create a more functional space. Wooden furniture, paper lamps, shoji screens, and tatami mats highlight the traditional Japanese charm, while private bathrooms and flat-screen TVs appeal to modern standards. Each room comes with its own decor and views, so make sure to select wisely! Hanging scrolls, paintings, and ikebana flower arrangements add to the warmth of the accommodations. The garden also integrates features from the past, such as stone lanterns.

You'll get to taste fresh natural products and menus that change with the seasons. Enjoy kaiseki or gozen meals for lunch and dinner; the kaiseki breakfast is also highly rated by previous guests. The most-used ingredient is seafood, including eel and crab. Another highlight of your gastronomic experience here will be the attractive tableware, which adds to the aesthetics of the colorful dishes and was referred to as "the kimono of the food" by Rosanjin.Â
Note: Kaiseki meals must be reserved five days in advance, and should be for at least two people.
