Onsen and Garden Nana dates back 204 years. It used to be an old folk house in the snowy Oku-Hida mountains. The property was home to a beloved toy museum before it was transformed into a ryokan. The new owners ensured that the property was well-preserved to highlight its original architecture. However, some modern amenities and features were also introduced to keep up with the changing times. Sustainable methods have also been incorporated to preserve the environment. These include the use of solar heat, construction waste, and even food waste.
Design and Architecture
Much of the kominka-style ryokan's original architecture has been meticulously preserved by the owners. You can still find the sturdy wooden beams that originated from strong trees; they've been perfectly supporting the centuries-old property. The luxurious suites offer a blend of traditional Japanese charm and modern functionality. All three rooms offer gorgeous wooden furnishings and warm lighting. Each is also decorated uniquely. Even the three private hot spring baths are different from each other to provide a one-of-a-kind experience.

Onsen and Garden Nana's sustainability initiatives extend to food as well. Local ingredients are used for the meals, and no food is wasted. The menu changes to accommodate seasonal and other environmental changes, so you can always expect the best. The ingredients are obtained from local farmers and hunters who are in tune with nature. The ryokan also offers a traditional Japanese hearth for cooking and highlights Hokuriku cuisine.
The restaurant serves both Japanese and international dishes, including delicious seafood. There's provision for special dietary needs, such as vegetarian, vegan, or dairy-free meals. Kid meals are also available. You can savor your meals at the spacious dining hall, which is open to all irrespective of race or gender. The bar is also a great place to kick back with a glass of wine.
Cultural and Outdoor Experiences
Onsen and Garden Nana's excellent location puts it close to various museums and gardens, so it's perfect for both nature lovers and culture enthusiasts. However, if you wish to relax and explore the property itself, make sure to spend time on the mountain-view terrace or check out the private onsens. Bathing in onsens is one of the most popular aspects of Japanese culture, and your visit to the country will be incomplete without it! The baths are all open-air but roofed and fenced for weather and privacy concerns. You'll enjoy fresh spring water directly from the source, as well as unlimited access to the lounge and seasonal tea services. Each 50-minute slot costs around 4,180 JPY (27.73 USD). Check out the three baths below:
The Shigaraki ware bath offers a ceramic structure designed by Bungo Okuda. It's located amidst lush trees and accommodates up to two people.
The rock bath is ideal for those who want a more natural experience. You can enjoy it with your friends and family as it allows up to four people.
The Aomori Hiba bath is made of cypress, so you can breathe in the beautiful scent while soaking in the water. Its flat structure and barrier-free access make it ideal for those with mobility issues. The bath allows up to four people.
