History

Machiya houses like Hisago Machiya Houses have a rich history, dating back to as far as 794 AD (Heian Period). Although the history of Hisago may have been lost to time, guests can still enjoy a traditional stay in the property as Machiya Residence Inn managed to retain its old-world charm while adding modern conveniences. From the exterior to the warm and inviting interiors, every detail of Hisago Machiya is thoughtfully done to give guests a deeper insight into Kanazawa's history and appeal.

Design and Architecture

As soon as you step inside the machiya, you'll be greeted with a variety of colors, including a deep shu-iro (red) and a calming uguisu (green), both of which are traditional colors of Japan. Earthen walls with wooden accents complete the look, creating a homey atmosphere to welcome all kinds of travelers. You can also find hyotan (gourd) motifs around the property, which represent good fortune in Japanese culture.
