Kanazawa is famous for its old townhouses or machiyas lining its historic streets. While many machiyas have been neglected over time with the emergence of modern accommodations, some have been preserved beautifully. Hinaya Higashiyama Machiya House is one such property, meticulously preserved by Machiya Residence Inn. No information is available about when exactly the machiya was established, but its samurai-era architecture can be traced back to over a century.
Design and Architecture
The machiya's exterior will remind you of former samurai residences with its dark latticework. You'll find high ceilings with original wooden beams still preserved in the charming dining area. The Japanese-style room comes with authentic woodwork displayed on the circular latticed window. It also features the signature 'gunjo' blue of Kanazawa, tatami mats, shoji screens, and a tokonoma (alcove for displaying art). The lovely tsuboniwa (small inner garden) is also well-landscaped.
